Dolores Umbridge’s family
Probably one of the most hated characters in the Harry Potter series is Dolores Umbridge. Dolores Umbridge was a half-blood witch born by a wizard Orford Umbridge and a muggle named Ellen Cracknell.
Dolores Umbridge had a squib brother but she was both ashamed of her muggle lineage and ashamed of her father being a janitor for the Ministry of Magic. Dolores Umbridge despised her family and denounced them in terms of social hierarchy and despise of muggles as she claimed wizard superiority and pursued authority.
Dolores Umbridge’s life
Dolores Umbridge didn’t enjoy her school years at Hogwarts as she lacked magic ability nor did she earn much respect due to her ill manner. Dolores Umbridge was a Slytherin House student but even the Head of Slytherin House, Horace Slughorn disliked Dolores Umbridge as he would even refer her as stupid.
Dolores Umbridge managed to get a job at the Ministry of Magic and she pretended to be a wholesome person while she would cheat her way up behind for her career.
Starting from an internship, Dolores Umbridge eventually became the senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic and she became one of the closest associated with Minister Cornelius Fudge.
Dolores Umbridge denied her father as she disliked him being a janitor and denied her muggle lineage. Dolores Umbridge claimed that she was part of the Selwyn family.
Dolores Umbridge eventually secured a seat at the Wizengamot and became the professor for the Defense Against the Dark Arts as part of Cornelius Fudge’s plan to keep surveillance on Albus Dumbledore.
Cornelius Fudge intended to even sabotage the student’s class plans as Minister Fudge was delusional and feared that Albus Dumbledore may form an army against him by placing Dolores Umbridge as the professor for the Dark Arts.
Dolores Umbridge’s Discrimination Policies
Dolores Umbridge had a victim mentality on her family lineage and despised mixed bloods even though she herself was a half-blood witch. She denied herself and she claimed wizard superiority and dominance as well.
Dolores Umbridge was responsible for anti-werewolf policies and put discrimination policies against centaurs, merpeople and other magical beings. Dolores Umbridge despised giants for the same reason so she shows disrespect to a great degree when she visited Hagrid’s shack as well
Truth of the Dementor Attack at Little Whinging
The dementor attack at Little Whinging on Harry Potter and Dudley Dursley was actually the plot by Dolores Umbridge. Still by this point dementors were under the control of the Ministry of Magic. Dolores Umbridge ordered two dementors to attack Harry Potter as she thought this would favor the Ministry of Magic’s propaganda to discredit Harry Potter.
Terrifyingly, Dolores Umbridge ordered the dementors to perform the Dementor’s Kiss on Harry Potter. If successful, Harry Potter would become a living dead if not, Dolores Umbridge plotted on expelling him from Hogwarts. Even Cornelius Fudge didn’t know of this evil plan by Dolores Umbridge.
Dolores Umbridge as Hogwart’s Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor
The Ministry of Magic appointed Dolores Umbridge as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor to monitor and overwatch on Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter.
Dolores Umbridge didn’t like children and she sought this as a personal favor as she thought it was the best opportunity to exert power and overwhelm people which she couldn’t do during her school years at Hogwarts.
Starting by interfering with Albus Dumbledore’s speech at the start of term feast, Dolores Umbridge replaced all lectures with only reading pages of the Defensive Magical Theory book.
She banned students from asking questions and just ordered students to read out the book alive. Then, Dolores Umbridge slowly started to assert total control and manipulate students starting from Harry Potter.
I must not tell lies – Dolores Umbridge’s invention Black Quill (Blood Quill)
Dolores Umbridge invented the Black Quill or the Blood Quill which was a quill that didn’t require ink as it would use the blood of the writer as ink. Dolores Umbridge used black magic on making this Black Quill that would constantly use the blood by scarring the writer’s hand and heal it that would repeat this process.
The sharp Black Quill eventually if used much would make a permanent scar on the user of the Black Quill. Dolores Umbridge used the Black Quill for detention on Harry Potter. Harry Potter had to write “I must not tell lies” repeatedly until he got a scar that clearly marked “I must not tell lies”.
Dolores Umbridge was sadistic and enjoyed using the Black Quill on students leaving them a permanent scar to remember their ‘lesson’. Professor Minerva McGonagall strongly opposed to the inhumane and disgraceful disciplinary actions by Dolores Umbridge but Dolores Umbridge used this as an opportunity to step up as High Inquisitor for Hogwarts.
The Inquisitorial Squad
All of the Inquisitorial Squad members were from House Slytherin. Under the authority of Dolores Umbridge, the Inquisitorial Squad could deduct points from other houses and all Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor House students held a grudge against the relentless point deductions by the Inquisitorial Squad. They had the authority such as deducting house points, screening of personal owl post mails.
Dolores Umbridge as High Inquisitor
Dolores Umbridge started to harass and sabotage Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after she was appointed as High Inquisitor. Dolores Umbridge started to file unrighteous rules under the authority as High Inquisitor.
She issued these as Educational Decrees and claimed the authority of the Ministry of Magic permitted such rules. While issuing numerous unrightful rules under the Education Decree, She started to interfere and dishonor the professor’s and their classes claiming a rightful ‘inspection’.
When Dolores Umbridge was picked off by George and Fred, even the professors were delighted due to the ill manners by Dolores Umbridge. Dolores Umbridge’s disrespectful actions include measuring the height of professor Filius Flitwick, purposely interrupting professor Minerva McGonagall’s class, mocking professor Severus Snape and eventually trying to overthrow Sybill Trelawney
. Albus Dumbledore steps in and makes sure Sybill Trelawney stays on campus as she is associated with a peculiar prophecy between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Albus Dumbledore eventually appoints Firenze a centaur as professor for Divination which even freaked out Dolores Umbridge even further.
Dolores Umbridge as Headmistress of Hogwarts
After using veritaserum on Cho Chang in the movie, and by the betrayal by Marietta Edgecombe in the novel, Dolors Umbridge and her Inquisitorial Squad discovered the Room of Requirement and Dumbledore’s Army in it.
Dolores Umbridge wanted to interrogate Harry Potter even further and demanded veritaserum but Professor Snape scolded her that she has depleted all the veritaserum as she didn’t know the proper dose which actually required only several drops.
Kingsley Shacklebolt who was a secret member for the Order of the Pheonix quickly took measures to cover up for Dumbledore including manipulating Marietta Edgecombe’s memory as Kingsley Shacklebolt accompanied Cornelius Fudge to replace Dumbledore.
Albus Dumbledore took all responsibility and escaped by the help of Fawkes. Now, Dolores Umbridge replaced Albus Dumbledore as the new headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Rebellion against Dolores Umbridge
Peeves the poltergeist never took orders from students, however he has been truly moved by Fred and Geroge Weasley twins and Peeve despised Dolores Umbridge as well.
Peeves started to cooperate with Fred and George and started harassing Dolores Umbridge. The professors who usually disliked Peeves didn’t cooperate and actually aided Peeves and the twin’s pranks on headmistress Umbridge.
Fred and George created swamps in the school and cracked open one of the largest fireworks in the school that created total chaos. Eventually Fred and George quitted Hogwarts after embarrassing and humiliating Dolores Umbridge making a mess and summoned their brooms off to start their own joke shop.
With the money that Harry loaned by winning the Triwizard tournament, the Weasley twins started their own business the Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.
Dolores Umbridge and the Forbidden Forest
Harry Potter tried to contact Sirius Black by the Floo Network but was caught by Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad. Snape refused to give Umbridge veritaserum and Hermione tricked Umbridge that they held a secret weapon in the Forbidden Forest.
Dolores Umbridge who abominated ‘half-breeds’ was soon caught by the centaur herd in the Forbidden Forest as she constantly mocked and insulted. Eventually, Albus Dumbledore rescued her from the centaurs as the centaurs from the Forbidden Forest and Albus Dumbledore had mutual respect.
Dolores Umbridge’s suspension and aftermath
After Lord Voldemort was publicly witnessed by the Ministry of Magic including Cornelius Fudge himself, Cornelius Fudge himself was overthrown and Dolores Umbridge was suspended from headmistress.
While Dolores Umbridge walked away from Hogwarts in shame, Professor McGonagall borrowed her cane to Peeves which Peeves gave a good beating on Dolores Umbridge with Professor McGonagall’s cane.
However, despite her evil doings at Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge restored her seat as the Senior Undersecretary for the Minister of Magic and she started to work for the new minister Rufus Scrimgeour who was the former head of the Auror’s Office.
