Hog’s Head Inn
The Hog’s Head Inn was a tavern which wasn’t so popular nor mainstream that was located at Hogsmeade. The Hog’s Head Inn was a pretty small and stuffed tavern which was also kept a bit filthy.
However, the Hog’s Head Inn held a long history. The wild boar’s head was the symbol of the Hog’s Head Inn. The Hog’s Head Inn held many great secrets and history including Aberforth Dumbledore who was Albus Dumbledore’s younger brother being the owner of the Hog’s Head Inn.
Rubeus Hagrid obtained the egg of the Norwegian Ridgeback dragon at the Hog’s Head Inn from a stranger who happened to be Quirinius Quirrell who was disguised as a traveler to obtain information on how to bypass Fluffy the three headed dog guarding the philosopher’s stone (sorcerer’s stone).
As many people avoided visiting the Hog’s Head Inn, Hermione Granger selected the Hog’s Head Inn as the secreting gathering point for the Dumbledore’s Army or the DA.
Those who wished to join Dumbledore’s Army had to sign a parchment prepared by Hermione.
During this process of recruiting Dumbledore’s Army members, Mundungus Fletcher was overhearing disguised to report to Albus Dumbledore while another wizard named Willy Widdershins was also listening to report to Cornelius Fudge and Dolores Umbridge. Aberforth Dumbledore himself overheard the gatherings of Dumbledore’s Army.
Room of Requirement
In the cinema, Neville Longbottom discovers the Room of Requirement while in the novel Dobby helps discover the Room of Requirement. Albus Dumbledore always quotes that “Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.”.
The Room of Requirement was a magical space that would only appear to people who were desperate in demand of it.
Even for faculty members that have worked for the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for a long time may have never heard or witnessed the Room of Requirement.
The Room of Requirement would transform into whatever is required for those who have found it and were desperate in need of the Room of Requirement, however it could only transform into certain level by the Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration.
The Room of Requirement was located on the seventh floor of Hogwarts school. To open the Room of Requirement, not only did a person need to be desperate of need of it but they must be very specific for what the person is of demand.
Dumbledore’s Army would practice in the Room of Requirement with everything equipped to practice defensive and offensive magic.
Room of Requirement – Inquisitorial Squad & Marauder’s Map
The Marauder’s Map had almost everything of Hogwarts properly mapped, however it didn’t have any information of the Room of Requirement.
Because the Marauders Moony, Prongs, Wormtail and Padfoot didn’t need anything that the Room of Requirement offered so the Marauders couldn’t discover the Room of Requirement.
The Inquisitorial Squad and Dolores Umbridge couldn’t find the Room of Requirement at first because they weren’t specific enough on what they were searching for.
Dumbledore’s Army
As Dolores Umbridge the new professor in Defense Against the Dark Arts sabotaged the course, those who’ve supported Harry Potter, headmaster Albus Dumbledore and those who needed a practical study group in terms of the Defense Against the Dark Arts gathered and formed the D.A.
Under Harry Potter’s guidance as he was one of the most skilled students in magic against the Dark Arts, the members of Dumbledore’s Army practiced many practical spells.
There were initially 28 members that started off and they had to sign a parchment that Hermione has prepared.
Harry Potter even made his first kiss with Cho Chang after lecturing in the Room of Requirement with Dumbledore’s Army. Along with such incidents, the members of Dumbledore’s Army successfully learned many magical skills to defend themselves. For the practical exam of the O.W.L, students from Dumbledore’s Army prevailed and performed excellent.

Exposure of Dumbledore’s Army
In the cinema, Dolores Umbridge uses vertiaserum on Cho Chang to gather information of Dumbledore’s Army and successfully break into the Room of Requirement. In the novel, a Ravenclaw student Marietta Edgecombe exposes Dumbledore’s Army in fear of her mother who worked for the Ministry of Magic might lose her job. Harry Potter brawled and started to take distance from Cho Chang from both.
In the movie, Cho Chang despite veritaserum being used, was the one who exposed Dumbledore’s Army so Harry kept distance. In the novel, Cho Chang would defend Marietta Edgecombewhich made Harry Potter furious as nobody else in the Dumbledore’s Army didn’t report on them
Hermione Granger’s jinx on the member list of Dumbledore’s Army
Hermione Granger actually casted a very powerful jinx on the member list parchment. Hermione Granger got an idea on Voldemort and the Death Eater’s Dark Mark so she casted a jinx on the member list that would leave a scar saying “SNEAK” on those who snitched on Dumbledore’s Army.
Marietta Edgecomb suffered from a “SNEAK” mark on her face for the rest of her school life for reporting on the Dumbledore’s Army to Dolores Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad.

Expeliarmus – Disarming Charm
Enchanted by Expeliarmus, Harry Potter taught the disarming charms which was his signature spell once he was first inspired by Snape using it during the Duel Club against Gilderoy Lockhart during Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The disarming charm would disarm the opponent if hit.
Expecto Patronum – Patronus Charm
Detailed explanations are in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The Patronus Charm was the only defense spell effective against dementors and lethifolds.
The Patronus Charm was a very difficult spell and if mastered, a guardian animal form would appear that would help defend the caster. The Patronus Charm could also be used as a powerful messenger as well.
Impedimenta – The Impediment Jinx
Casted by the enchantment ‘Impedimenta’ the Impediment Jinx would prohibit the motions of the victim in other words, reduce the speed and velocity of the victim’s movements.
To an extent the impediment jinx could freeze the target but as it could highly reduce the speed. Thus, in a different mechanism from the fullbody-bind curse, the impediment jinx could freeze a person
Reducto – The Reductor Curse or the reducing curse
By the enchantment ‘Reducto’, the reductor curse would obviously reduce or destroy objects that were casted of this curse into pieces.
Including Ginny Weasley, the witches of the Weasley family had a natural talent for the reducing curse as they’ve been able to perform ‘Reducto’ the reducing curse with a surprisingly destructive manner. The Reducing Curse was also referred as a blasting curse as it would cause a blast and destroy the object that the curse was casted to.
Stupefy – Stupefying Charm or the stunning spell
By the enchantment ‘Stupefy’, the stunning spell would halt the motion of objects and would temporarily stun the victim. The Stupefying charm was used in duels often because the charm itself didn’t necessarily cause much damage.
The stunning spell enchanted by stupefy was one of the most common spells that were both effective for offence and defense as it could buy a quite amount of time for escape, cast additional spells etc.
Harry Potter first learned the stunning spell while he prepared for the Triwizard Tournament and taught the members of the Dumbledore’s Army as one of the most standard magic spells to protect themselves which he even referred the stunning spell as the bread and butter for wizards.
Levicorpus – The Dangling Jinx
Casted by the enchantment ‘Levicorpus’, the dangling jinx would cause the person casted by the jinx to hang upside down in midair. The counter-spell for the dangling jinx was the enchantment “Liberacorpus”.
Through Harry’s occlumency into Severus Snape’s memories, Harry first witnesses his father bullying Snape by this dangling jinx. Although levicorpus now became a standardized jinx, the inventor of the dangling jinx holds another story to be revealed in Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince.
Petrificus Totalus – The Full Body-Bind Curse
Also known as the body freezing spell or curse, by the enchantment of the “Petrificus Totalus” the victim’s limbs such as the arms and leg parts would suddenly freeze and the victim would become a stiff and cannot move.
Hermione Granger first used this on Neville Longbottom during Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone where Neville Longbottom tried to stop Harry, Hermione and Ron from chasing after the sorcerer’s stone.
The full body-bind curse didn’t completely paralyze the victim and only temporarily paralyzed the victim for a short amount of time. There were even more powerful paralyzing curses and petrification curses.
