Occlumency
Occlumency was the magic that could counter Legilimency. Occlumency was basically a defense magic against those trying to infiltrate one’s mind but it was a highly difficult magic so those who could perform Occlumency were named as Occlumens.
Basic Occlumency would simply leave the mind look blank if infiltrated by Legilimency while advanced levels of Occlumency could produce ‘layers’ of false memories, emotions and thoughts.
Occlumency was one of the methods that could resist veritaserum. Notified Occlumens that had talent in Occlumency were Lord Voldemort, Bartemius Crouch Junior, Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape.
Severus Snape was skilled in occlumency so he could work as a double agent for the Order of the Pheonix and the Death Eaters. Albus Dumbledore would let Severus Snape train Harry Potter in both occlumency and legilimency due to his skills.
Albus Dumbledore could defend Lord Voldemort’s legilimency and hold great secrets while preventing Voldemort infiltrate his head.
Barty Crouch Junior was skilled in Occlumency so skilled wizards and witches in legilimency such as Professor Snape and headmaster Dumbledore didn’t recognize Barty Crouch Junior when he was disguised as Allastor Moody.
Lord Voldemort was also a skilled Occlumens so he could seal off Harry Potter from entering his head as both seemed to be connected in a very peculiar way. Harry Potter was unable to skillfully utilize occlumency.
Legilimency
Legilimency was a powerful magic that could control and read the minds of people. Occlumency was the counter-part of Legilimency and possibly the only method to prevent Legilimency. A wizard or witch that could perform Legilimency was called a Legilimens.
The Sorting Hat of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry possessed powerful Legilimency so it could read the minds of students and sort them to the most suitable houses.
Powerful Legilimens known were the 4 founders of Hogwarts especially Salazar Slytherin, Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, and Lord Voldemort himself. Legilimens skilled in Legilimency needed not enchant the spell Legilimens to perform Legilimency.
Throughout the whole Harry Potter series, Albus Dumbledore was described to know the whole universe once he makes eye-contact of a person. Albus Dumbledore was navigating through people by just making eye contact with Legilimency.
So even though Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley went through a lot, Albus Dumbledore didn’t need much of their explanation as he already read through their minds. Albus Dumbledore also noticed Kreacher’s plot by Legilimency.
Severus Snape was also talented in Legilimency who was able to teach Harry Potter (which Harry Potter eventually gave up) of both Legilimency and Occlumency by Albus Dumbledore’s request.
Despite the many dramas between Harry Potter and Severus Snape, Severus Snape could use Legilimency to read Harry’s mind so Severus Snape didn’t take much argument with Harry Potter for all the drama.
Lord Voldemort was such a powerful Legilimens that he was known to manipulate people, infiltrate people’s mind and drive them insane. Lord Voldemort was infamous for driving people insane with Legilimency until the limit but eventually kill them with the Killing Curse Avada Kedavra.
Lord Voldemort had a connection with Harry Potter but he was also infiltrating Harry Potter’s mind with Legilimency which showed Harry Potter nightmares, dreams and visions.
Harry Potter first witnesses the bullying of his father James Potter on Severus Snape through legilimency. Severus Snape was furious and stopped his Occlumency and Legilimency lessons after this incident.
Harry Potter’s dream and visions connected with Lord Voldemort
Lord Voldemort had a connection with Harry Potter that shall be revealed through the series but Lord Voldemort constantly tortured Harry Potter by infiltrating Harry’s mind with Legilimency.
Lord Voldemort was after a certain prophecy between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort as Lord Voldemort failed to murder Harry Potter at the Little Hangleton graveyard during the Triwizard Tournament.
Lord Voldemort showed the vision of Arthur Weasley who was guarding the Department of Mysteries that had the prophecy to Harry Potter. Lord Voldemort’s snake Nagini attacked Arthur Weasley and left him severely injured.
Harry Potter luckily alerted Albus Dumbledore who sent the portrait of Professor Everard and Professor Phineas Nigellus Black to hospitalize Arthur Weasley to St Mungo’s Hospital.
In the novel, during Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s visit to St Mungo’s Hospital, descriptions of Gilderoy Lockhart were made and Neville Longbottom was found vising his parents Allice and Frank. Nevile Longbottom reveals what happened to his parents officially for the first time.
Mass Breakout of Azkaban
Lord Voldemort manages some terms with the Dementors to free some of his best lieutenants from Azkaban.
The Dementors were already satisfied with working with the Ministry of Magic so Lord Voldemort had to take some time to negotiate with them. Finally, ten of the most dangerous prisoners broke out from Azkaban.
Among them were the deadliest and most loyal death eaters to Lord Voldemort such as Mulciber, Travers, Rabastan Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, Antonin Dolohov, Augustus Rookwood, and Bellatrix Lestrange.
The Ministry of Magic still didn’t believe this was Lord Voldemort’s doing and declared by the Daily Prophet that Bellatrix Lestrange’s cousin Sirius Black was responsible for the mass breakout of Azkaban.
After the mass-breakout of Azkaban, many started to believe that Lord Voldemort returned and started to believe Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore.
Neville Longbottom’s Awakening
Neville Longbottom witnesses the breakout of the Bellatrix Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange and Rabastan Lestrange who were responsible for torturing his parents Allice and Frank with the Cruciatus curse to insanity.
Neville Longbottom was also indirectly related with the prophecy between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. As a result, the Death Eaters would torture his parents to insanity. Neville Longbottom was a shy introvert who was clumsy and often considered disappointing.
However, after reading of the mass-break out of Azkaban, Neville Longbottom awakens and becomes strongly willed and even becomes a very skillful wizard.
Neville Longbottom quickly became an important member for Dumbledore’s Army and started to prove his courage and awakened his potential.
Giants in Harry Potter
Giants were huge humanoids that were resistant to magic and was considered highly dangerous to the wizardry society as they were very aggressive.
Although giants weren’t as intelligent as humans, they were a great threat and though they had their own culture, giants were hostile to wizards and witches.
The leader of the giants was called a Gurg which was the strongest giant among the giant tribe. Giants favored size and would even abandon giants that are small.
Hagrid’s mother Fridwulfa simply abandoned Hagrid because he was small and a half-giant. However Fridwulfa also abandoned Hagrid’s step-brother Grawp even though Grawp was a pure-blood giant because simply Grawp was too small as a giant which embarrassed Hagrid’s mother Fridwulfa.
Summit with the Giants
Albus Dumbledore sent Rubeus Hagrid and Olympe Maxime who was the headmistress from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic to persuade the giants never to join Lord Voldemort.
However, Lord Voldemort also sent death eaters to persuade the giants to join alliance with Lord Voldemort. The giant tribe’s gurg(the leader of giants) Karkus was originally in favor with Hagrid and Olympe Maxime as they’ve brought gifts that satisfied him.
However another giant Gologomath challenged and murdered Karkus and took over as gurg. The new gurg Golgomath favored Lord Voldemort and the death eaters.
As a result the giants joined Lord Voldemort’s forces. Hagrid had to escape and the Order of the Pheonix failed to prevent the giants from allying with Lord Voldemort.
