The Department of Mysteries & The Unspeakables
The Department of Mysteries was a peculiar department that has been researching and archiving the magic of the deepest mysteries of the world such as love, time, space, soul, death, life and other kinds of mysteries that even the wizarding world cannot understand.
The tasks and research of the Department of Mysteries was strictly confidential as it carried out many covert operations.
Those who worked for the Department of Mysteries were called the Unspeakables to describe the confidentiality of their work and they wielded great power.
The Department of Mysteries was located on Level Nine underground and it was granted great privileges and independence from the other departments of the Ministry of Magic.
The Department of Magical Law Enforcement had no authority at all to intervene with the Department of Mysteries nor to commence any judicial actions against the Unspeakables. Even the Minister of Magic didn’t have much authority nor could the Minister intervene with the tasks of the Department of Mysteries
Rooms / Divisions of the Department of Mysteries
Hall of Prophecy - Department of Mysteries
The Hall of Prophecy archived prophecies of individuals, groups and all kinds. Prophecies were stored and protected in a glass sphere orb.
The glass spherical orbs were highly dangerous as the prophecies within held great power that only those involved for each prophecy should touch the glass orb. If an individual that isn’t related with a prophecy touches the glass orb, the magic of the prophecy would immediately permanently drive the individual insane.
The Hall of Prophecy held numerous prophecies but during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries between the members of Dumbledore’s Army and the Death eaters, many shelves containing spheres of prophecies collapsed destroying the orbs.
Brain Room - Department of Mysteries
The brain room was believed to be the research room of the mind and the human brain. There were tanks of brains submerged in solutions. Once the brains were removed from the solution, a flow of massive thoughts from the brains would encroach the minds of wizard and witches around.
Time Room - Department of Mysteries
The device that Hermione Granger used to revert time during Harry Potter and the Azkaban was a Time-Turner. All the Time-Turners were produced and saved in the Time Room of the Department of Mysteries.
The Time-Turner that Hermione Granger had was granted permission by the Department of Mysteries by Professor Minerva McGonagall’s recommendation.
Hermione Granger realized she became oversensitive as she took too many classes by using the Time-Turner so she decided to drop out of several classes and return the Time-Turner to the Ministry of Magic which explains why Hermione didn’t possess the Time-Turner further on.
The Time Room of the Department of Mysteries that researched on the magic of time and related matters. The Time Room would experiment how far can a wizard or witch travel behind time without distorting the real world.
Through a series of experiments, the ‘Unspeakables’ of the Time Room concluded that a maximum of 5 hours of a hour-resversal charm that could both safely preserve a wizard or witch and the threads of time. During the battle of the Department of Mysteries, most of the time-turners were destroyed.
Space Chamber - Department of Mysteries
The Space Chamber was a research division on where the Unspeakables researched outer space. In the Space Chamber, models of planets would orbit in the dark matter like space.
Love Room - Department of Mysteries
The Love Room was a division that researched Love that was considered one of the most powerful magic in the wizardry world.
There was a large fountain of Amortentia which was the most powerful love potion in the wizardry world. Amortentia was so powerful that it was a dangerous potion as it would cause an endless obsession on those who drink it.
Death Chamber & The Veil - Department of Mysteries
The Death Chamber was a division where the Unspeakables researched Death. In the middle of the Death Chamber stood the Veil. The Veil was a mysterious ancient structure whose origin was unknown. Legends say that the Ministry of Magic was built over the Veil to keep it covert.
Many research on death in the Death Chamber was on the Veil. The Veil was hypothesized as the barrier between the living and the dead.
Whoever passes through the Veil would instantly die. Some would hear unrecognizable voices across the veil. Sirius Black was murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange as she put Sirius Black out of his balance and he accidentally passed the Veil.
In the movie, it is described as if Sirius Black was hit with the Killing Curse Abada Kadavra first and pass the Veil.
Voldemort’s effort to intercept the Prophecy
The death eater Augustus Rookwood himself used to be an Unspeakable at the Department of Mysteries before he was sent to Azkaban.
After the mass breakout at Azkaban, along with those who broke out Voldemort attempted to steal the prophecy.
Lucius Malfoy was donating huge amount of funds to the Ministry of Magic to create space for death eaters to cast an Imperius Curse and control employees to obtain the sphere that contained the prophecy between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.
However, all of the attempts failed and Voldemort sends Nagini to observe the Hall of Prophecy where Nagini the snake discovered and assaulted Arthur Weasley who was standing guard on that night.
Voldemort plots another plan and then lures Harry Potter to obtain the prophecy by showing a fake vision of him torturing Sirius Black by infiltrating Harry Potter’s mind with Legilimency after Kreacher informs Bellatrix Lestrange that Sirius Black was Harry Potter’s godfather.
Misunderstanding between Harry Potter and Sirius Black – Where was Sirius Black
Sirius Black gave Harry Potter the two-way mirror as a gift which he used to communicate with James Potter.
However, Harry Potter didn’t open this gift until Sirus Black’s death which could have prevented the misunderstanding between Harry Potter and Sirius Black in the first place. Harry Potter was even devastated when he found the two-way mirror.
Sirius Black was at 12 Grimmauld Place for the whole time. Harry Potter attempts to contact Sirius Black with Floo Powder at Dolores Umbridge’s office. Unfortunately, Kreacher receives the call and by the secret orders of Narcissa Malfoy(Narcissa Black), Kreacher cunningly misleads Harry Potter that Sirius Black was missing on purpose.
To the Ministry of Magic Department of Mysteries
Dolores Umbridge catches Harry Potter red handed and she thought Harry Potter was attempting to contact Albus Dumbledore. Dolores Umbridge demands more veritaserum to Severus Snape but he refuses that Dolores Umbridge overused all the veritaserum.
Harry Potter screams that “the enemy has Padfoot” to Severus Snape which he replied that he has no ideas what Harry Potter was talking about.

After Hermione fooled Dolores Umbridge that Dumbledore’s Army had a secret weapon in the Forbidden Forest, with the help of Grawp and the angry centaurs, Dolores Umbridge was detained and the members of Dumbledore’s Army head to the Ministry of Magic for Sirius Black’s aid.
Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood rode thestrals to the Ministry of Magic to rescue Sirius Black without knowing it was a trap set by Voldemort.
Battle of the Department of Mysteries – Hall of Prophecies
After the Dumbledore’s Army members arrives at the Department of Mysteries, they confront the most loyal and deadly death eaters of Lord Voldemort.
At the Hall of Prophecy in the Department of Mysteries, the death eaters and Dumbledore’s Army were on a standoff.
Led by Lucius Malfoy, the twelve death eaters at the Department of Mysteries were Jugson, Mulciber, Walden Macnair, Crabbe Senior, Avery, Nott, Augustus Rookwood, Antonin Dolohov, Rabastan Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, and Bellatrix Lestrange.
Only the person involved in a prophecy could touch the sphere that contained a prophecy. Lucius Malfoy demands Harry Potter to hand the prophecy orb to him.
However, Harry refused and the fierce battle between Dumbledore’s Army and the death eaters began. The fierce battle between the eventually destroyed the shelves of prophecy orbs and as the battle progressed destroyed many parts of the other divisions of the Department of Mysteries.
Severus Snape’s distress call – Arrival of the Order of the Pheonix at the Department of Mysteries
Professor Severus Snape still had to work as a double agent for the Order of the Pheonix. At Dolores Umbridge’s office, when Harry Potter was caught using the Floo Powder, Harry Potter yells ‘The Enemy had Padfoot.
Professor Severus Snape pretended that he didn’t have any idea what Harry said in front of everyone else including Dolores Umbridge but he immediately checks on Sirius Black.
Professor Severus Snape realizes that Sirius Black was intact at 12 Grimmauld Place the whole time and alerts the Order of the Pheonix that Harry Potter was walking into a trap.
The Order of the Pheonix members Kingsley Shacklebolt, Nymphadora Tonks, Lemus Lupin, Sirius Black, Alastor Moody arrives when Harry Potter almost handed over the prophecy orb to Lucius Malfoy.
The prophecy orb that contained the prophecy of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort was shattered during the battle. Albus Dumbledore also arrives atter the battle intensified in the Death Chamber.
During the intense duel, Bellatrix Lestrange fires a spell that took Sirius Black off balance which made him pass the Death Veil and Sirius Black immediately lost his life.(The movie, Bellatrix Lestrange fires the Killing Curse Avada Kedvara that murders Sirius Black)
Lord Voldemort and Albus Dumbledore’s duel at the Ministry of Magic Atrium
Remus Lupin grabs Harry Potter furious of Sirius Black’s death. However, Harry Potter pursuits Bellatrix Lestrange. After Harry Potter caught Bellatrix Lestrange, Lord Voldemort himself apparates to murder Harry Potter but Albus Dumbledore manages to arrive on time.
Lord Voldemort confronts the only enemy he fears Albus Dumbledore. While Albus Dumbledore addresses Lord Voldemort as Tom Riddle whom he considered an old mistake and monster that he may have created. The duel between Albus Dumbledore was intense.
Lord Voldemort would summon a fire serpent with the fiendfyre spell which Albus Dumbledore counter with a water orb spell.
As Albus Dumbledore started to take the high round on the duel, Lord Voldemort possesses Harry Potter hoping that Albus Dumbledore himself would sacrifice Harry Potter for Voldemort’s death
Harry Potter resists and pushes out Lord Voldemort from his mind with the love with his family and his god father Sirius Black and the friendship around him.
