Hogwarts under Voldemort’s control
Severus Snape became the new headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Death Eaters so called the Carrow siblings, Alecto Carrow and Amycus Carrow were also assigned as deputy-headmaster and deputy-headmistress to assist Severus Snape.
Alecto Carrow became the professor for muggle studies while Amycus Carrow became the professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts. The Carrow siblings severely tortured students by the Cruciatus curse when they didn’t comply.
Takeover of Hogwarts
Neville Longbottom has been leading Dumbledore’s Army which has grown by size due to the terrors of the Carrow siblings. The novel and movie differ as Harry Potter first searches for the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw and rather the students of Hogwarts never assembled all at once.
The duel between Severus Snape also differs where Snape was crushed by a bewitched armor when he ran away. Nevertheless, Alecto Carrow and Amycus Carrow were disabled but they’ve summoned Voldemort while Severus Snape successfully escapes death before being crushed by the armor by Filius Flitwick.
Preparation for the Battle of Hogwarts
Professor Minerva McGonagall sends word to allies and the Order of the Phoenix that Harry Potter needs time to buy and that a battle is imminent at Hogwarts.
Students equal to seventeen or older were allowed to fight while Poppy Pomfrey and Argus Filch evacuated the youngsters by the secret passage to Hog’s Head Inn.
Still, some of the young wizards and witches remained. Order of the Phoenix members and the professors casted protective spells such as fianto duri, protego maxima, repello inimicum.
Minerva McGonagall used the Piertotum Locomotor spell to animate the armors and statues of Hogwarts to defend Hogwarts. Order of the Phoenix members arrived along with many graduates of Hogwarts including Katie Bell, Alicia Spinnet, Oliver Wood and even Percy Weasley.
Percy Weasley finally makes up with the Weasley family and apologizes which the Weasleys accept. While Pansy Parkinson urged others to give up on Harry Potter, Professor McGonagall instead evacuates all Slytherin House students.
Gryffindor students remained the most, followed by Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw while none of the Slytherin House students remained.
Destruction of Helga Hufflepuff’s Cup by Hermione
Ron mimicked parseltongue to say ‘open’ in front of the Chamber of Secrets to obtain a basilisk fang which in the movie he mimicked from Harry’s sleep talking while in the novel he mimicked the moment Harry opened Slytherin’s Locket.
Hermione and Ron enter the Chamber of Secrets where the skeleton of the basilisk remains. They’ve retrieved several fangs of the basilisk and destroyed Voldemort’s horcrux, the Cup of Helga Hufflepuff with one of them.
Story of the Grey Lady and journey of Ravenclaw’s diadem
Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem was a legend that was known to give wisdom. However, after Rowena’s daughter Helena Raven claw stole it, the whereabouts of the diadem were unknown.
It turns out the Grey Lady was Helena Ravenclaw and the Bloody Baron was the person who Rowena Ravenclaw sent to bring back her daughter.
Helena Ravenclaw stole Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem in jealousy of her mother Rowena’s intelligence and ended up in Albania running away. However, the Bloody Baron tracked Helen Ravenclaw to Albania and accidentally murdered her. When Voldemort,
Tom Marvolo Riddle was young he tricked the Grey Lady, the ghost of Helena Ravenclaw to get the location of Ravenclaw’s diadem.
Voldemort has been in Albania because he first traveled there to search Ravenclaw’s diadem and resided there for several occasions.
After Voldemort defiled Ravenclaw’s diadem making it a horcrux, he hid it in the Room of Requirement when he visited Hogwarts, met Albus Dumbledore to apply for a job.
Destruction of Ravenclaw’s diadem and standoff at the Room of Requirement
With Luna Lovegood’s help the Grey Lady who was Helena Ravenclaw’s ghost told Harry the story of Ravenclaw’s diadem.
He later realizes that the diadem that he hid next to Severus Snape, the Half Blood Prince’s copy of Advanced Potion Making, was Ravenclaw’s diadem.
In the Room of Requirement, Harry, Hermione and Ron confront Draco Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle where Harry was using Draco Malfoy’s wand and Draco tells Harry he borrowed his mother’s wand because Harry took his wand.
The six went to a duel in the Room of Requirement but Crabbe released Fiendfyre magic that releases a powerful beast formed flame and blaze.
Crabbe couldn’t control the Fiendfyre and was eventually killed by his own magic. While the fiendfyre fumed various beasts in flames all over the Room of Requirement, Harry discovers some brooms and hands them over to Ron and Hermione.
However, they didn’t leave Draco and Goyle(in the movie, Crabbe) behind and picked them up and escaped the Room of Requirement.
In the novel, fiendfyre was a spell powerful enough to destroy Ravenclaw’s diadem, Voldemort’s horcrux while in the movie, Harry destroys the horcrux with the fang of a Basilisk and it was kicked into the fiendfyre. (In the movie Goyle makes fiendfyre and dies). The trio were caught up in the fierce Battle of Hogwarts.
Battle of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
While the trio were destroying Hufflepuff’s cup and Ravenclaw’s diadem, the battle of Hogwarts has already begun. Voldemort was at the Cave Island where he hid Slytherin’s Locket and realized that Slytherin’s Locket went missing.
Voldemort was furious and felt fear because his horcruxes were compromised and being hunted down and destroyed by Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione.
Voldemort after hearing Harry Potter’s infiltration to Hogwarts storms Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with his allies and his Death Eaters.
Voldemort and his allies based in the Forbidden Forest that drove out the acromantulas out from the forest that originate from the hive of Aragog.
Acromantulas that were driven out of the Forbidden Forest would later break in during the Battle of Hogwarts attacking wizards whether they were against Voldemort or with Voldemort.
The snatchers led by Scabior at the wooden bridge(in the movie) couldn’t break through the defenses of Hogwarts and some were even disintegrated by the power of the magic shield protecting Hogwarts.
In the movie, allies and death eaters of Voldemort couldn’t penetrate the magic shield casted by the professors of Hogwarts and the Order of the Pheonix members but Voldemort destroys the shield with the power of the Elder Wand.
Voldemort realizes something peculiar and uncomfortable with the Elder Wand even though it did have great power. Voldemort realizes that the Elder Wand hasn’t been fully operating with its full potential with him. Giants broke through a way for Voldemort’s allies as a spearhead against those defending Hogwarts.
Death Eaters and those defending Hogwarts also started a fierce battle. Curses, hexes, jinxes and spells were flying all over the place.
In the novel, Harry, Ron and Hermione were looking for Nagini, the last horcrux they’ve thought that existed. Wizards, witches, giants all tangled up together were at a fierce fight.
Even Hagrid’s brother Grawp joined the fight and started facing the giants. While the fierce battle on the court of Hogwarts continued, dementors started to approach Hogwarts trying to feed on those who were defending Hogwarts.
The wizards and witches defending Hogwarts would send out their patronsues that would deflect the dementors away from Hogwarts. Aberforth Dumbledore was featured as the person who emits a huge patronus charm in the movie.
At the wooden bridge, in the movie, Neville Longbottom with the help of Seamus Finnigan holds off the snatcher’s advance into Hogwarts.
Aftermath of the First Battle of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
In the movie, Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione heads to the docks of the boat house where students used to board on the boats to find Nagini and Voldemort.
In the novel, they’ve headed to the Shrieking Shack where they’ve found Nagini, Voldemort and Snape. Voldemort murders Snape believing that would grant him the true ownership of the Elder Wand as Severus Snape murdered Albus Dumbledore.
Voldemort felt the Elder Wand wasn’t properly responding nor obeying him and thinks that it pledges allegiance to Severus Snape because he murdered Albus Dumbledore, the former owner of the Elder Wand. The trio observed the death of Severus Snape.
After Severus Snape’s death Voldemort calls for an hour-armistice to take care of the dead while giving them a chance to hand over Harry Potter once more.
Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin were murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange and Antonin Dolohov respectively. Colin Creevey, another Gryffindor student was murdered while he fought by the other students. Lavendar Brown, Ron’s ex-girlfriend was also murdered by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback.
Fred Weasley also killed in action by another death eater. Along with these characters, fifty other faculty members, Hogwarts students and parents and those who supported the Order of the Pheonix that came for aid were murdered or killed during the Battle of Hogwarts.
