Years of the Sun – First Age

*These events are all before Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

Birth of Dior

Before the outbreak of Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, Beren and Luthien gave birth to their only son Dior who was the first half-elf and half-human that was ever born.

Dior was considered the heir to Thingol, the king of Doriath while Beren and Luthien lived quietly untouched in the east of Beleriand Ossiriand.

The Children of Hurin - Birth of Turin, Nienor, the children of Hurin

*These events are all before Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

Hurin the chieftain of the House of Hador who had once visited Turgon’s Gondolin resided at Dor-Lomin that was just beneath Hithlum, the land of the Noldor king Fingon.

Traditionally the House of Hador has served Fingolfin and his son Fingon, the Noldor elf kings. Hurin married his wife Morwen from the House of Beor and had a son called Turin. Later Hurin and Morwen also had a daughter named Urwen but she died from a plague from Angband.

After, Nirnaeth Arnoediad broke out and Hurin was captured by Morgoth and the Easterlings invaded Hitlum, Morwen feared that Morgoth would also pursuit her husband’s son Turin and sends Turin to the king of Doriath Thingol as a foster child.

After Morwen sent Turin to Doriath, she gave birth to Hurin’s daughter and the sister of Turin Nienor Niniel. Nienor Niniel never knew her brother’s face as Turin was sent to Doraith before her birth. Turin and Nienor become the main characters of The Children of Hurin.

Birth of Tuor, the child of Huor

Before Nirnaeth Arnoediad broke out, Huor, the brother of Hurin married Rian. Rian gave birth to Huor’s son Tuor, however Huor was killed in action as he defended the last line so Turgon and the forces of Gondolin could successfully retreat alongside his brother Hurin. Hurin was captured by Morgoth and Huor was killed.

Tuor’s mother Rian died by the sorrows of losing Huor and before she died, she has asked a Sindar elf named Annael to adopt Tuor.

Annael was a survivor of Nirnaeth Arnoediad and became the leader of the elves of Hithlum under control of Morgoth. Tuor would become the main character of The Fall of Gondolin.

The Children of Hurin - Nirnaeth Arnoediad and Hurin

After the tragic failure of the Union of Maedhros after the Battle of the Unnumbered Tears Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Hurin and Huor protected the rear line to defend the retreat of the new Noldor elf King Turgon and the forces of Gondolin after Fingon was killed by the Balrog lord Gothmog.

Huor died after being shot by a venomous arrow and Hurin was captured by Gothmog. Gothmog would torture Hurin, the chieftain of House Hador and lord of Dor-lomin and sent him to Morgoth.

The Children of Hurin - Curse of Morgoth on Hurin

Morgoth first tried to corrupt Hurin by seducing him to join the dark sides, yet Morgoth discovered that Hurin had once befriended Turgon and had visited the secret kingdom of the elves Gondolin. Morgoth, who didn’t know the location of Gondolin severely tortured Hurin for intel. However, Hurin resisted and yet Morgoth makes another plot.

Morgoth would use his powers to curse the family of Hurin and he forced Hurin to watch the tragedy of Hurin’s family with a magic eye of Morgoth.

Hurin was strapped and locked onto a chair on the Thangorodrim where he had to witness every single tragedy that his family would face by the curse of Morgoth. Morgoth planned to impoverish and break the spirit of Hurin by this terrible curse.

The Children of Hurin - Thingol adopts Turin as his foster child

After Hurin’s wife Morwen sent Turin to Thingol of Doriath, Thingol welcomed Turin as Thingol’s now son-in-law Beren was a far relative with Morwen and Turin and Thingol was aware of the honorable acts of Turin’s father Hurin during Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

Turin would grow under the guidance of Turin and befriended the captain of the wardens of Doriath Beleg and the great general of Doriath Mablung. Along with Mablung, Beleg,

Turin with the Dragon-helm of Dor-Lomin, a legendary artifact that was descended within House Hador would lead raiding parties against the orcs of Morgoth and secured the border of Doriath.

The Children of Hurin -Turin's murder of Saeros, Turin become an outlaw

Saeros was one of the council members of Thingol’s advisers and Saeros was jealous of Turin as he was against the adoption of Turin from the first place. Saeros and Turin mutually hated each other and Searos would often insult Turin in front of the elves.

After Turin returned from the borders of Doriath, Saeros provoked Turin by insulting Turin’s mother Morwen. Both got into a fight but Mablung was able to mediate them.

The next day, Saeros once again ambushed Turin and Turin tried to grab Saeros where the clothes of Saeros slipped off.

Saeros would run naked while provoking Turin but he slipped from the cliff of a river and died as he crashed into the rocks of the river. Turin feared the judgement of the elves of Doriath and ran away from Doriath and became an outlaw.

While the Girdle of Melian was protecting Turin from the Curse of Morgoth, Turin started to slowly change by the Curse of Morgoth as the Girdle of Melian couldn’t protect him after Turin became an outlaw

Tuor’s capture and Annael’s refuge to Cirdan’s elves

The Easterlings that served Morgoth were finally at the brink of taking total control of Hithlum which was once the kingdom of the Noldor elf Fingolfin and Fingon. Finally, Annael had no choice but to abandon Hithlum and decided to head to the Bay of Balar to join the elves led by Cirdan.

Tuor was captured by the Easterlings while Annael and the elves successfully took refuge in the Bay of Balar. Annael spoke of Tuor to Cirdan and Cirdan would communicate with the Valar Ulmo of the existence of Tuor, the son of Huor.
