History of the Mr.Olympia - Part 2

1980’s Mr. Olympia

In the year of 1980, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the Mr. Olympia stage with a sudden appearance. Nobody expected his comeback because Arnold Schwarzenegger made his entry late without prior notice. In 1981, Franco Columbo wins back the Mr. Olympia title. Arnold and Franco both were the first and second bodybuilder to retrieve the Mr. Olympia title.

Arnold and Franco

Chris Dickerson who was the runner-up for both Franco and Arnold’s comeback, wins the Mr. Olympia title in 1982 and retires immediately from bodybuilding.

Samir Bannout wins the Mr. Olympia in 1984. After Samir’s victory, starts Lee Haney’s dynasty of the Mr. Olympia. Lee Haney wins a total of 8 Mr. Olympia titles. Lee Haney not only had a shredded definition but he also had massive muscle mass.

Although he had difficulty in defending the title in 1989 as Vince Taylor and Lee Labrada(Lee Labrada is Hunter Labarada's father), Lee Haney successfully defended the title of Mr. Olympia. After Lee Haney retried from bodybuilding after his final victory in 1991, comes a new era in bodybuilding.

1990’s Mr. Olympia

Lee Haney retires from the Mr. Olympia stage and bodybuilding after winning the title in 1990 and 1991. Shawn Ray and Lee Labrada tried to stop Lee Haney from his consecutive streaks but failed to do so.

Lee Haney

After Lee’s retirement, the runner up of 1991, Dorian Yates sets up a new era in bodybuilding. Dorian Yates started the era of ‘muscle mass’ to the Mr. Olympia and started the ‘chemical warfare’ which is also the dark side of the bodybuilding industry to a whole other level which included various anabolic steroids, insulin and growth hormones.

Dorian Yates's Physique

Although symmetry and balance were still important criteria, after Dorian Yates’s 6 consecutive Mr. Olympia titles, the muscle mass of open body builders competing in the Mr. Olympia significantly increased. Dorian suffered from various parts including his rotator cuff, left quad, left bicep but still able to defeat his competitors like Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone and Nasser El Sonbaty.

Although judges of the IFBB did consider symmetry, balance the era of muscle mass has begun. Flex Wheeler with muscle mass and symmetry all together won the 1997 Mister. Olympia.

Flex Wheeler

Flex Wheeler seemed undefeatable as he had everything a bodybuilder needed and bodybuilding fans expected a new dynasty. Bodybuilding fans sure do see a new dynasty but it wasn’t Flex Wheeler’s dynasty. Ronnie Coleman famous for his special scream ‘Light Weight!’ and ‘Yeah Buddy’ along with his heavy lifting training style presented an explosive physique in the 1998 Mr. Olympia.

Ronnie Coleman vs Flex Wheeler

Flex Wheeler was really disappointed in the 1998 Mr. Olympia results which was shown on screen. However, this was the start of Ronnie Coleman’s dynasty as he wins 8 consecutive Mr. Olympia titles since.

2000’s Mr. Olympia

Ronnie Coleman seemed undefeatable as his physique was shocking to the public. However, coms the long famous rival Jay Cutler in 2001. Jay Cutler who was famous for his quad stomp seriously threatened ‘King’ Ronnie’s reign. The 2001 Mr. Olympia was probably one of the most controversial results among the Mr. Olympia results. There was dispute between Jay Cutler and the IFBB as well Jay Cutler decides not to participate and boycott the 2002 Mr. Olympia.

Jay Cutler returns on 2003, and the war between Jay Cutler and Ronnie Coleman persists. This rivalry is considered one of the best rivalries in the body building scene. In 2006, finally Jay Cutler witnesses ‘FEAR’ Ronnie Coleman’s own eyes. Jay Cutler finally achieves the Mr. Olympia title in 2006 and 2007. Ronnie Coleman ends second in 2006 and 4th in 2007. Ronnie decides to step down from the Mr. Olympia stage but still he was the king of bodybuilding. After Ronnie’s retirement. Dexter Jackson defeats Jay Cutler in 2008.

Jay Cutler finally wins his Mr. Olympia title against Ronnie Coleman and even defends his title in 2007. Ronnie Coleman ended second in 2006 and 4th in 2007 when he decides to retire from the Mr. Olympia stage.

In 2008, Dexter Jackson defeated Jay Cutler and became Mr. Olympia. Dexter Jackson won 29 bodybuilding profession shows and have been competing since 1999 until 2020 for about 30 years. In 2009, Jay Cutler takes back the Mr. Olympia title. He was the 3rd person ever to reclaim the Mr. Olympia title after Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbo.

Jay Cutler

2010’s Mr. Olympia

In 2010, Jay Cutler wins his 4th Mr. Olympia title. After Ronnie’s retirement, Jay Cutler was the king of the bodybuilding scene. Then came ‘The Gift’ Phil Heath. Phil Heath defeats Jay Cutler for the Mr. Olympia title and wins a total of 7streaks of the Mr. Olympia title.

Phil Heath / Jay Cutler

Phil Heath’s most fearsome rival Kai Greene attempted to take down Phil Heath, but failed. However the rivalry between Kai Green and Phil Heath was another entertainment  to the bodybuilding fans. There seemed to be no problem at all for Phil Heath to tie the record with Lee Haney and Ronnie Colman.

Kai Greene vs Phil Heath

However, Social Network Services prevailed, the public was shocked on the ‘bubble gut’ of bodybuilders. Bodybuilding was long a bit minor culture but as SNS shipped out bodybuilding competitions, the ‘chemical warfare’ of bodybuilding was an easy target for the public to attack. The Bubble gut was also known as Palumboism, which is the abdominal distension often found in bodybuilders from insulin and growth hormone usage.

The IFBB took the public’s demand very seriously and control of abdominal tension became an important criterion to the judging in 2018. Thus, shockingly, Phil Heath loses his Mr. Olympia title to Shawn Rhoden. In 2019, Brandon Curry takes the Mr. Olympia title in te absence of Phil Heath.

2020 Mr. Olympia - To be continued and in process

Mamdouh Elssibay who is more know as ‘Big Ramy’ takes the Mr. Olympia title in 2020 and 2021. He presented a massive physique weighing 295 lb which is about 134 kg. Big Ramy competed in the Mr. Olympia level competition since 2013. Although he went through a tough journey, he eventually wins the Mr. Olympia title in 2020 and 2021. He won the People’s Champion title as well in 2020 as many fans congratulated him dand were inspired by his never-quitting attitude.

Big Ramy. He sure is big

Hadi Choopan wins the Mr. Olympia title in 2022. There were controversies over the 2021 Mr. Olympia between Big Ramy and Hadi Choopan, however critics and judges pointed out that his shoulders were a bit suspicious of external infusion. He also had difficulties due to the USA’s sanctions against Iran. (Hadi Choopan is Iranian) However he was able to overcome such difficulties and win the Sandow and the Mr. Olympia title
