Formation of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men
After news that Sauron has commenced attack again on Gondor, Gil-Galad swore to finish off Sauron once and for all from Middle-Earth and summoned his elves from Lindon.
Elendil of the kingdom of Arnor formed an alliance with Gil-Galad that would later be referred as the Last Alliance of elves and Men.
Gil-Galad and Elendil sent word out to the other free races of Middle Earth for the cause of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
Gil-Galand and Elendil joined forces at Amon Sul and would head to Imladris(Rivendell) where Cirdan and his elves from the Grey Havens also joined. Elrond from Imladris(Rinvendell) would become the vice-commander of the elves of Eriador under Gil-Galad.
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men after extensive training, allocation of logistics and planning started to march east across the Misty Mountains.
Joining of the Greenwood, Lothlorien elves and dwarves of Khazad-dum
Sauron after hearing the formation of the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men sent orcs to the Misty Mountains. However, the orcs feared the might of the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men and eventually hid themselves instead of fighting with the Last Alliance of the Elves.
These orcs would later become the core of the orc forces in the Misty Mountains later on. At the start of the Anduin River, the elves of Lothlorien led by the elf king Amdir and the Greenwood elves led by the elf-king Oropher along with the dwarves of Khazad-dum joined the alliance.
Battle of the Dagorlad – Charge of the Silvan elves Death of Oropher and Amdir, Dead Marshes
At the plains of the Dagorlad, Sauron’s army with orcs, trolls, wolves and other creatures confronted the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men.
The forces of Gondor led by Anarion joined the alliance and war wages upon the plains of Dagorlad that was near the Black Gate. Although the Silvan elves joined the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, they never wished to take orders from the Noldor elf Gil-Galad nor would they cooperate with the dwarves.
The Silvan elves under the command of Oropher and Amdir suddenly charged against the forces of Morgoth without consent with Gil-Galad or the other commanders.
The Silvan elves had to face heavy casualties as a consequence where half of their forces were wiped out. The King of Greenwood the Great Oropher and the king of Lothlorien Amdir was also killed in action during the Battle of the Dagorlad.
The countless corpses during the Battle of the Dagorlad were buried but as the Dead Marshes expanded, the corpses of the Battle of the Dagorlad became part of the Dead Marshes.
Still the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men were able to push Sauron back the Black Gate and advances to Mordor
Siege of Barad-dur
The Last Alliance of the Elves and Men were able to siege the fortress Barad-dur as they’ve advanced into Mordor. However, the defenses of Barad-dur were strong and the elves of Eriador by Gil-Galad, the humans led by Elendil, dwarves of Khazad-dum and the Silvan elves led by Thranduil who took command after death of his father Oropher couldn’t breach the gates of Barad-dur.
The allies of Sauron would breach into the southwest of the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men so part of the elf-human-dwarf alliance had to split and defend the flanks of the main forces on the Siege of Barad-dur.
During an attack on Barad-dur, Anarion was killed in action and the Siege of Barad-dur would last for a whole seven years.
Duel with Sauron and the death of Gil-Galad and Elendil
As the Siege of Barad-dur was almost about to break through Barad-dur, Sauron himself led his allies and the forces of Mordor that would push the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men to the slopes of Mount Doom (Orodruin). Gil-Galad and Elendil stood against Sauron and the three went into intense battle.
Elrond, Cirdan and Isildur aided Gil-Galad and Elendil fighting Sauron. However, Sauron was able to slay both Gil-Galad and Elendil while Elendil was also able to knock down Sauron to the ground. The sword of Elendil, Narsil also stumbled and broke into pieces as Elendil fell.
Perish of Sauron and the cutoff of the One Ring
Isildur witnessing the death of his father Elendil quickly grabbed a piece of the broken blade Narsil of his father and cut off the One Ring off from Sauron’s finger.
Sauron, who was only able to hold a physical form by the One Ring that he forged with his soul and powers lost the One Ring and couldn’t retain his physical body and with a burst of flame and light, Sauron disappeared in midair.
The Last Alliance of the Elves and Men successfully riven off the remaining orcs, nazguls and the dark creatures and became victorious.
Isildur and the One Ring
Isildur held the One Ring after he cut off Sauron’s finger with the broken blade of Narsil. Elrond and Cirdan together with Isildur headed to the Crack of Doom inside the Orodruin or Mount Doom where the One Ring was forged. Only by the flames and power of the Crack of Doom could the One Ring be created and destroyed.
However, despite Elrond and Cirdan’s novel request to destroy the One Ring, Isildur couldn’t overcome the temptation of the One Ring and claimed the One Ring for himself claiming compensation for the death of his father Elendil and brother Anarion.
End of the Second Age and the start of the Third Age
The Second age would end with the downfall of Numenor, Reshaping of Arda by Iluvatar and the War of the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men. Sauron hasn’t completely been destroyed as the One Ring wasn’t destroyed.
Yet some may blame Isildur, but the One Ring was so powerful in temptation that even the Maiar and novel elves could barely resist the will of the One Ring.
Thranduil and Greenwood the Great
The Silvan elves of Greenwood the Great and Lothlorien suffered so many casualties that only a handful were able to make it home. After the death of the Oropher, the king of the Wooldand Realm, his son Thranduil would take his place and become the king of the Silvan elves of the Greenwood the Great.
Later Greenwood would be corrupted and called Mirkwood where Thranduil would become known as the king of the Mirkwood elves.
Amroth and Lothlorien
Lothlorien also suffered many deaths during the War of the Last Alliance of the Elves and Men. The king of Lothlorien Amdir was killed during the war and his son Amroth would become the new king of Lothlorien.
Isildur, the new High King of Arnor and Gondor
Isildur would grant his nephew Meneldil the son of his brother Anarion as the first official king of Gondor while Isildur claimed the set as the High King of the Northern Kingdom Arnor. Isildur planted the White Tree seed that he kept from Minas Ithil and planted it at Minas Anor also known as Minas Tirith.
Arnor suffered many more losses including the High King Elendil while Gondor had comparatively less casualties.
Gondor would become the front line against Mordor and would take a watch on the activities of Mordor. As Minas Ithil was recovered, Minas Ithil became the main fortress for surveillance on the activities of the dark forces in the east.
Cirdan and Elrond
After the death of the last High King of the elves of the West, the Noldor elf Gil-Galad, Cirdan would take leadership of Lindon and Elrond continued to rule Imladris also known as Rivendell.
Elrond with the power of the Vilya, the Ring of Sapphire or the Ring of Air would make Rivendell prosperous and Rivendell would become called the last resort of the elves. Cirdan would take the Ring of Fire or the Red Ring called Narya after Gil-Galad’s death.
