Temptation of the Silmaril, Thingol’s request to engraft the Silmaril on the Nauglamir
After Hurin gave the Nauglamir which was a present from the dwarves to Finrod, the king of Nargothrond to Thingol, Thingol was caught up with a desire and urge by the beauty of the Silmaril to engraft the Silmaril onto the Nauglamir.
Thingol caught up with this desire day and night and requested the dwarves from Nogrod to forge the Simaril onto the Nauglamir.
Melian had a bad vision of this and she has constantly urged Thingol to stop his obsession but the temptation of the Silmaril has already driven Thingol mad. The dwarves of Nogrod completed Thingol’s request but the beauty of the Silmaril tempted the dwarves as well.
Conflict between the dwarves and Thingol, Murder of Thingol
After the dwarves completed the engrafting of the Silmaril onto the Nauglamir, the dwarves of Nogrod were also enchanted by the beauty of the Silmaril. The dwarves claimed the possession of the Nauglamir after they visited Thingol to deliver the completed Nauglamir with the Silmaril.
The dwarves asserted that their ancestors have forged the Nauglamir for the elf-lord Finrod of Nargothrond and claimed their ownership.
However, Thingol would reply that the Nagulamir and the Silamril was rightfully his possession as the lord of Beleriand and even reclined to pay the dwarves for forging the Silmaril onto the Nauglamir.
The elf king Thingol of Doriath that reigned since the first birth of the elves died such a futile death. The dwarves then slayed Thingol and ran away with the Nauglamir.
However, the elves avenged Thingol and recovered the Nauglamir. Two of the dwarves managed to escape to Nogrod in the Blue Mountains and lied that the elves had unfairly attacked them that provoked the dwarves to go against war with the elves of Doriath
Why the elves and dwarves hate each other
Thingol or Elwe was the first elf king for the Teleri elves including the Sindar elves. Most of the elf lords that remained in Middle-Earth were Sindar elves and remembered the slaying of Thingol by the dwarves.
The dwarves on the other hand, that survived from Doriath would make fake propaganda that the elves have attacked them without any cause at first.
This distorted information became history and inevitably the dwarves and elves during the Lord of the Rings and throughout the whole Legendarium wouldn’t trust each other.
The dwarves would still cooperate with the Noldor elves but they would resist the Sindar elves, forest elves, and the green elves.
Dwarves would still respect and honor Noldor elves such as Gil-Galad, Galadriel. Also, dwarves respected Elrond as well because he was the son of the hero Earendil and wasn’t much of Sindar elf(Elrond does have some Sindar lineage)
Melian returns to Valinor and the Loss of Girdle of Melian
Melian went into despair after the death of her husband Thingol. Melian warned her husband Thingol of her visions of omen of the Nauglamir and the Silmaril since Hurin had brought the Nauglamir and Beren brought the Silmaril to Doriath.
Already Melian’s daughter Luthien was also mortal and soon to be lost as Luthien chose to accept death after her first death at the Hall of Mandos. Melian’s sorrows and grief of the loss of her husband and the mortal fate of Luthien made Melian lose her ability to maintain the Girdle of Melian.
Melian was a powerful Maia and she held the ability to maintain the Gridle of Melian that concealed Doriath and prevented outsiders to enter Doriath. Even Morgoth feared the power of Melian itself and couldn’t even find Doriath because of the Girdle of Melian.
However, because of the sorrows of the loss of Thingol, Melian withdrew the Girdle of Melian and left for Valinor as the only reason Melian remained in Middle Earth was her husband and her daughter Luthien.
Battle in the Thousand Caves
The dwarves of Nogord would also inform the dwarf kingdom Belegost news that Doriath attacked the dwarves while refusing to pay for rightful price for the work of combining the Silmaril with the Nauglamir.
Belegost refused war but the false stories of the conflict between dwarves and Thingol spread throughout all the dwarves.
After the Girdle of Melian disappeared as Melian left for Valinor by the sorrows of the loss of Thingol, the dwarves of Nogrod march to Doriath for war and the Battle in the Thousand Caves began. the dwarves were able to take the Nauglamir with the Silmaril engrafted as they killed Mablung who was protecting the treasury.
However, Beren was also informed of the dwarf invasion and with the help of the green-elves, Beren and the forces of Doriath were victorious and reclaimed the Nauglamir as well. The retreating dwarves were once again attacked by the ents and green elves.
Dior the new king of Doriath
The son of Beren and Luthien, Dior became the new king of Doriath. Dior has married his wife Nimloth and had two twin sons Elurin and Elured and a daughter Elwing. Elwing would later become the wife of Earendil.
However, Doriath was at stake as it lost the Girdle of Melian that concealed and protected Doriath. Dior’s mother Luthien held the Nauglamir with the Silmaril after the Battle in the Thousand Caves, but they’ve died a few years later and Dior held the Silmaril.
The Second Kinslaying of the elves and the Ruin of Doriath
The Oath of Feanor has awakened again and the sons of Feanor would request the Silmaril from Dior. The Girdle of Melian suppressed some of the temptation of the Silmaril and Doriath was much powerful when Thingol and Beren were alive and when Melian used to reside at Beleriand.
Even the sons of Feanour wouldn’t dare Luthien to demand the Silmaril but now Doriath lacked such power. The sons of Feanor have been sporadically asking to return the Silmaril that as they claimed the silmaril was rightfully in possession of House of Feanor.
However, when Dior refused, the sons of Feanor commenced a surprise attack on Doriath that marked both the second kinsalying of the elves by the House of Feanor and the perish of Doriath.
The sons of Feanor marched from Ossiriand where they resided after the retreat during Nirnaeth Arnoediad to Doriath which was now revealed after the Girdle of Melian banished.
Doriath was destroyed by the House of Feanor while Dior killed Celegorm but he died during the second kinslaying of the elves.
The House of Feanor also lost Celegorm, Curufin and Caranthir during the battle at Doriath. Celegorm’s men in fury would leave the twins of Dior Elured and Elurin in the forest to starve to death. Doriath was burned to ashes but once again the House of Feanor despite another genocide of elves couldn’t recover a single Silmaril.
Escape of Elwing, regret of Maedhros and Maglor and Morgoth satisfied with the fall of Doriath
Dior before death, gave the Silmaril to his daughter Elwing and made her escape along with the refugees of Doriath to the river mouth of the Sirion River. Later Elwing would meet with the refugees of Gondolin and meet and marry Earendil. Earendil and Elwing would give birth to Elrond and Elros.
Meanwhile, Maedhros and Maglor couldn’t find the Silmaril, yet they’d lost three of their brothers. Maedhros and Maglor also felt guilty for another massacre of the elves.
Maedhros and Maglor especially felt guilty for the death of the twins of Dior Elured and Elurin and regretted their actions.
Because of this guilt, later during the Third kinslaying of Elves, Maedhros and Maglor would spare the lives of Elrond and Elros taking great care of them by mentorship.
Morgoth was very satisfied with the perish of Doriath by civil war of the elves and Morgoth was even more satisfied that all of this started off with the torture of Hurin with his children and releasing him as Hurin was the person who delivered the Nauglamir to Thingol.
The tragedy of Hurin plotted by Morgoth would even trigger another event that helps Morgoth almost claim the whole Middle Earth, the Fall of Gondolin.
