The Number Seven
The number seven is a magical number throughout the Harry Potter series. In terms of Arithmancy, Hogwarts professor Septima Vector explained that the number seven is especially powerful and had extraordinary magical properties.
Hogwarts school courses consisted of seven years with seven core subjects at the first year. There were also seven floors at Hogwarts. There were initially seven secret passes to Hogwarts as well. In many other aspects, the Number Seven was frequently used throughout the whole Harry Potter series.
Voldemort’s Seven Horcruxes and the Seven Potters
Voldemort originally intended to divide his soul into seven fragments including himself. Voldemort believed that the magical properties of the number seven would help protect him and his horcruxes. However, the day Voldemort murdered the Potter family, he inevitably and unconsciously made another horcrux Harry Potter..

This harmed the integrity of the magical properties of the number seven that Voldemort intended. On the other hand, Harry Potter was protected by the friends and colleagues during the Battle of the Seven Potters who were willing to sacrifice themselves for Harry Potter.
Why did Voldemort make horcruxes from special items?
Narcissistic Voldemort could have made a horcrux from an ordinary item that would have made it almost impossible to seek. However, Voldemort’s narcissism, ego and arrogance along with him considering himself special forced Voldemort to make horcruxes from special items that would symbolize a prestige of Voldemort.
As Voldemort made horcruxes from special items, Harry Potter could have relatively easily sought and destroy the horcruxes of Voldemort.
Tom Marvolo Riddle’s Diary
Voldemort created his horcrux Tom Marvolo Riddle’s Diary by murdering the muggle born witch Myrtle Warren who would later become the ghost Moaning Myrtle.
Voldemort created this horcrux by murdering Myrtle Warrne with the Basilisk, the best hidden in the Chamber of Secrets. Presumably this was the first horcrux that Voldemort has ever created.
Tom Marvolo Riddle’s Diary was special for Voldemort as it was the records of his glory days at Hogwarts.
Voldemort was attached with Hogwarts because it was the school that let Voldemort know he is a special wizard and differentiated himself from others. Hogwarts was also a refuge from the muggle world, Cole’s Wool’s Orphanage for Voldemort. Tom Marvolo Riddle’s Diary was the first horcrux to be destroyed by the fang of the Basilisk.
It also became a major hint that multiple horcruxes existed as Albus Dumbledore examined it for years and theorized that Voldemort made multiple horcruxes.
Voldemort handed over Tom Marvolo Riddle’s Diary to Lucius Malfoy but no one except for Voldemort knew what a horcrux was. Lucius Malfoy only though it was a key to open the Chamber of Secrets.
Gaunt’s Ring
Voldemort made Gaunt’s Ring at the Riddle House located in Little Hangleton by murdering his own father Tom Riddle Senior with his uncle Morfin Gaunt’s wand.
Instead of placing the Gaunt’s Ring into someone’s possession, Voldemort casted many protection curses and magic onto Gaunt’s Ring and the Gaunt Shack s he hid the Gaunt’s Ring at the Gaunt Shack.
Albus Dumbledore discovered the Gaunt’s Ring at the Gaunt Shack. While Voldemort never knew, Albus Dumbledore discovered the Gaunt’s Ring had the Resurrection Stone one of the Deathly Hallows.
Albus Dumbledore wore the Gaunt’s Ring by the temptation to use the Resurrection Stone and was cursed by one of Voldemort’s curses. Albus Dumbledore destroyed the Gaunt’s Ring with the Sword of Gryffindor at his office.
Slytherin’s Locket
Voldemort made Slytherin’s Locket a horcrux by murdering a muggle at an unknown location after he snatched it from Hepzibah Smith after murdering her while he worked as an employee for Borgin and Burkes.
Voldemort hid Slytherin’s Locket at the Cave Island where he put the Drink of Despair, inferius infested lake and the magic basin and magic boat which Voldemort thought was invincible.
Regulus Arcturus Black stole Slytherin’s Locket and replaced it with a fake. However, this Slytherin’s Locket was stolen by Mundungus Fletcher and eventually ended up in Dolores Umbridge’s possession.
Harry, Ron and Hermione infiltrated the Ministry of Magic and intercepted Slytherin’s Locket. Ron Weasley destroyed Slytherin’s Locket with the Sword of Gryffindor at the Forest of Dean.
Hufflepuff’s Cup
Voldemort murdered Hepzibah Smith while he was an employee at Borgin and Burkes and framed Hepzibah Smith’s house elf Hokey of Hepzibah Smith’s murder.
Voldemort obtained both Hufflepuff’s Cup and Slytherin’s Locket. By the murder of Hepzibah Smith, Voldemort made the Hufflepuff’s Cup a horcrux.
Voldemort gave Bellatrix Lestrange the Cup of Hufflepuff to keep it inside the Lestrange family vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank.
Bellatrix Lestrange like Lucius Malfoy never knew the existence of the horcrux and only knew that Voldemort considered Hufflepuff’s Cup very important and she only kept it safe in the Lestrange Family vault without question.
Ron Weasely, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter impersonated Bellatrix Lestrange and with the help of the goblin Griphook, they infiltrated the Lestrange Vault and stole the Hufflepuff’s Cup.
The trio carried Hufflepuff’s Cup and Hermione Granger eventually destroyed the horcrux by the Basilisk’s fang inside the Chamber of Secrets.
Ravenclaw’s Diadem
Voldemort tricked the Grey Lady into confessing the location of Ravenclaw’s Diadem. The Grey Lady was the house ghost for Ravenclaw House who happened to be Helena Ravenclaw that was the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw.
The Grey Lady, ghost of Helena Ravenclaw tells Voldemort that she has stolen Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem and ended up in Albania but was murdered by the Bloody Baron.
Voldemort heads to Albania and found Ravenclaw’s Diadem. After Voldemort’s first visit to Albania in search of Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Voldemort takes refuge in Albania several times. Voldemort murders an Albanian muggle and makes Ravenclaw’s Diadem a horcrux.
Voldemort hid Ravenclaw’s diadem when he visited Hogwarts to apply for a job as a professor. However, Albus Dumbledore refused Voldemort’s proposal and Voldemort although very upset successfully hides Ravenclaw’s Diadem inside the Room of Requirement.
Harry Potter hid the Half Blood Prince’s copy of advanced potion making next to this diadem and marks the location after he realizes the diadem he saw was Ravenclaw’s Diadem after hearing from the Grey Lady before the Battle of Hogwarts.
Ravenclaw’s diadem was destroyed by Crabbe’s fiendfyre in the novel but in the movie, Harry Potter stabbed Ravenclaw’s diadem with the Basilisk fang while Ron kicked it into Goyle’s fiendfyre.
Harry Potter
Voldemort intended to make a total of seven fragments of his soul. Voldemort made six horcruxes with a big chunk of his soul within himself. However, the day Voldemort murdered the Potter family, Voldemort made another horcrux which he never knew about, Harry Potter.
When Voldemort casted the Killing Curse at Harry Potter and Harry Potter’s mother Lily Potter interfered sacrificing herself the Killing Curse rebounded and shattered Voldemort’s soul.
The soul fragment of Voldemort attached to the only living creature around it, Harry Potter. Harry Potter could link with Voldemort, speak parsel tongue, hear and feel horcruxes in the movie because he was a living horcrux of Voldemort.
The soul fragment of Voldemort within Harry Potter was destroyed by Voldemort’s own killing curse at the Forbidden Forest.
Nagini
Voldemort never sincerely trusted a person ever in his whole life. He was always brutal and ruthless even to his most loyal death eaters.
However, Voldemort showed affection to Nagini a snake who was a maledictus that was originally a woman(person) that was destined to become a snake by a blood curse.
Voldemort accompanied Nagini after he was destroyed by Harry Potter when he was behind Quirinus Quirrell’s head. Voldemort forged a small infant like body with Nagini’s poison and the blood of unicorn.
After Peter Pettigrew joined Voldemort, Voldemort has tortured and obtained information of the Triwizard Tournament of Bertha Jorkins, an employee of the Department of Magical Games and Sports.
Voldemort eventually murdered Bertha Jorkins and made Nagini a horcrux in Albania. Voldemort accompanied Nagini all the times casting protection magic on her personally. Nagini was destroyed and beheaded by Neville Longbottom by the Sword of Gryffindor during the Battle of Hogwarts.
