Triwizard Tournament
The Triwizard Tournament was a friendly competition between Hogwarts, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons school with a 700-year-old history that was held every five years.
Each school would take turn in hosting the Triwizard Tournament. One champion shall be selected by the Goblet of Fire that would represent each school. Each champion once selected had to complete three tasks and compete for the Triwizard Cup.
However, the Triwizard Tournament hasn’t been held for a long time as there were too many young witches and wizards that were sacrificed due to the dangerous tasks of the Triwizard Tournament.
It has been 100~200 years since the last Triwizard Tournament until the 1994-1995 Triwizard Tournament. Yet, mysteriously the Goblet of Fire gave a total of four names including Harry Potter to compete in the tournament.
Why did the Triwizard Tournament resume?
The Ministry of Magic has been working to revive the Triwizard Tournament. Originally this project was led by Bertha Jorkins who was an employee under the Department of Magical Games and Sports.
However, after Bertha Jorkins suddenly went missing, Ludo Bagman who was Head of the Magical Games and Sports department worked with Bartemius Crouch Senior who was the Head of the International Magical Co-operation department.
This whole story wasn’t depicted in the movie. While the Triwizard Tournament resumed, there was an additional rule that students under seventeen could not participate in the Triwizard Tournament.
Fleur Delacour
Fleur Delacour was the chosen champion for Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Fleur Delacour was famous for her attractive looks which descends from her ancestry as she was half-Veela.
A veela is a magical being that was native to Bulgaria that was known for their appearances and dances that would hypnotize humans.
For the first task of the Triwizard Tournament, Fleur Delacour faces the Welsh Green dragon which she enchants the dragon to sleep. However, the dragon’s snore put Fleur Delacour’s cloth on fire which she had to extinguish.
For the Yule Ball, Fleur Delacour asked Cedric Diggory at first but Cedric Diggory already asked Cho Chang out. Ron Weasley caught Fleur Delacour by surprise and he asked her to the Yule Ball as he was seduced by the magic that Fleur Delacour inherited as a veela. Ron fled before she could answer.
Eventually, Fleur Delacour took Roger Davies who was the captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team as her Yule Ball date. Fleur Delacour used the bubble-head charm that would trap oxygen for the second task of the Triwizard Tournament.
Fleur Delacour’s sister Gabrielle Delacour was taken hostage for the second task in the Black Lake; however, she was attacked by grindylows and was forced to retire. While Harry Potter saved both Ron and Gabrielle, she was touched and befriended Ron and Harry.
On the day of the 3rd task, Fleur Delacour sees William ‘Bill Weasley’ for the first time in the novel. Fleur Delacour entered the maze at the last but she retired early by an attack in the novel and in the movie by an attack by Viktor Krum. Fleur Delacour later lands an internship at Gringotts Bank.
Viktor Krum
Viktor Krum was chosen champion for Drumstrang Institute. He was already a world-wide Quidditch star of the Bulgarian National Quidditch team seeker.
Viktor Krum faces the Chinese Fireball dragon for his first task. Viktor performs the Conjunctivitis Curse that temporarily blinded the dragon. However he was deducted some points as the Chinese Fireball damaged other eggs it was protecting.
Viktor Krum faced some symbols of Gellert Grindelwald that he became furious as his family suffered from the terrors of Gellert Grindelwald. However, this symbol was rather more of a symbol of the Deathly Hallows.
Viktor Krum became fond of Hermione Granger as she wasn’t so interested in him but helped Harry. Viktor Krum was an introvert so he hesitated until the last day of the Yule Ball to ask her out.
Hermione Granger became the hostage for Viktor Krum’s second task in the Black Lake as well. Viktor Krum transfigured into a shark which was only half-successful. (Some people theorize that Viktor was on process to become an animagus and a shark was his animagi form) However, he was still successful to reach Hermione Granger.
In the movie, Viktor rescues Hermione at once but in the novel, he receives a bit of help by Harry as he couldn’t cut the rope at once which Harry gave him a rock because Harry wanted his friend Hermione rescued immediately as well.
Unlike the movie, Viktor Krum was with Bartemius Crouch Senior’s death as he was stunned by someone while Bartemius Crouch Senior suddenly just disappeared.
In the novel, Viktor Krum was under the Imperius Curse by someone and he suddenly tortured Cedric Diggory by the Cruciatus Curse.
Harry Potter stuns Viktor Krum and sends out a flare so someone could pick him up. After the Triwizard Tournament, Viktor Krum would ask Hermione to visit Bulgaria and he also befriended Harry Potter which he even complemented on Harry’s broom flying skills.
Cedric Diggory
Cedric Diggory was son of Amos Diggory, prefect for Hufflepuff House and the captain/seeker of its Quidditch team. Cedric Diggory was a popular student and also considered the perfect student for Hufflepuff House. Cedric Diggory was a very just and kind student.
The Quidditch game that Harry Potter fell from his broom by a dementor attack was actually against Cedric Diggory’s Hufflepuff team.
Cedric Diggory felt guilty for the victory and offered Oliver Wood the victory but Oliver Wood refused as he thought that Hufflepuff team still deserved the victory.
Over the numerous taunts and insults against Harry Potter as many accused him by cheating to get his name into the Goblet of Fire, Cedric Diggory was at least fair with him and even told his friends not to wear the Potter Stinks badges.
Cedric Diggory faced the Swedish Short-Snout dragon for his first task and he transformed a rock into a dog to distract the dragon.
This worked at first but the Swedish Short-Snout went after Cedric Diggory and severely burned him. Cedric Diggory advises Harry to take the Golden Egg to the prefect’s bathroom informing him of the password as well and take a bath to think about the task. Harry eventually got the hints of the second task thanks to Cedric Diggory.
At the Yule Ball,Cedric Diggory took Cho Chang to the Yule Ball as his date. Cedric Diggory’s hostage for the second task was Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory easily tackled the second task by the bubble-head charm same as Fleur Delacour.
Cedric Diggory entered the maze of the 3rd task together with Harry Potter as they were at a tie. However, in the novel he was mysteriously attacked by Viktor Krum who seemed to be out of his mind.
Harry Potter aided Cedric as Harry stunned Viktor Krum which Cedric briefly thanked and both went after the Triwizard Cup on their own. Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter meets again when an acromantula was defending the Triwizard Cup.
Cedric Diggory lost his wand once while tackling the acromantula which he recovers by Harry’s help. Cedric Diggory was saved twice in the maze and asks Harry to take the Triwizard Cup.
By Harry Potter’s suggestion, both hold the Triwizard Cup at once. However, it turned out the Triwzard Cup was a portkey and both Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory ends up in a weird graveyard.
They encounter Peter Pettigrew holding something which ordered Peter Pettigrew, Wormtail to kill Cedric. With a green flash, Peter Pettigrew screeches “Avada Kedavra” and murdered Cedric Diggory at sight.
