Grima Wormtongue’s exile to Isengard
After being banished, in the movie Grima Wormtongue heads to the Orthanc tower of Isengard. Grima Wormtongue provides information about Gandalf and the three followers Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn.
Grima Wormtongue would report on one weird possession of Aragorn that had a ring with two serpents with emerald eyes.
Grima Wormtongue would inform Saruman that Theoden would evacuate the people of Rohan to Helm’s Deep including women and children. Saruman would utilize the warg riders after receiving Grima’s report.
Ring of Barahir
The ring of Barahir had two serpents with emerald jewelry engraved. It was first given to an Edain human named Barahir from the House of Beor by Finrod the elf king of Nargothrond, the brother of Galadriel.
The Ring of Barahir was forged in Valinor and gifted to Barahir as a gift for saving Finrod’s life during Dagor Bragollach, the counter offensive made by Morgoth against the Noldor elves.
The Ring of Barahir became an heirloom to Numenor and Elendil was able to recover it. Saruman would become aware that Aragorn might be the long-forgotten bloodline of Elendil and Isildur. However, Saruman thinks that Gandalf was delusional.
Gollum and Smeagol Identity Disorder
Smeagol was the original name of the hobbit that was corrupted by the One Ring. Gollum was an identity that Smeagol developed after being enslaved by the One Ring where Gollum was an identity willing to harm anyone for the One Ring while Smeagol still retained the goodness as a hobbit.
As the identity of Gollum, Gollum swore to serve the Ring bearer Frodo Baggins on the One Ring or the Precious.
Smeagol also had self-hatred on himself as he knew he murdered his cousin Deagol for the One Ring. Even for the One Ring, Smeagol and Gollum were obsessed with it but they also had a strong love and hatred against the One Ring.
Frodo Baggins was able to bring out the kind personality Smeagol by the good deeds. Smeagol would even temporarily ward off the bad personality Gollum.
However, as Frodo, Sam and Gollum got closer to Mordor, the influence of the One Ring started to grow stronger and stronger and the evil personality Gollum started to take over.
The influence of the One Ring on Gollum and Frodo Baggins
As Frodo Baggins brought the One Ring closer to Mordor, the influence of the One Ring started to grow stronger awakening the negative emotions and thoughts of Frodo Baggins.
Frodo Baggins would even start to quarrel with Samwise Gamgee and distrust on Sam started to grow within Frodo Baggins by the One Ring.
In the movie, the influence of the One Ring was depicted physically as Frodo Baggins gets wounds and bruises on the spot where the One Ring chain is placed on his neck.
As the influence of the One Ring grew stronger, the movie scenes show the bruises and wounds bigger showing the One ring is physically giving pressure on Frodo. The One Ring’s influence also starts to strengthen the evil personality of Gollum.
Frodo, Sam and Gollum’s destination – Henneth Annun of Ithilien
Gollum’s plan to guide Sam and Frodo was to head to Ithilien, pass through Minas Morgul and climb the path of Cirith Ungol. Frodo, Sam and Gollum eventually arrives at Henneth Annun located in the lands of Ithilien.
At Henneth Annun Sam, Frodo and Gollum sees a legion of Haradrim and their battle elephants the mumakil or oliphaunts heading to Morannon to join Sauron. Sam, Gollum and Frodo were captured by the Ithilien rangers led by Faramir that ambushed the legion of Harardrim.
Haradrim – Southrons of Harad
The Haradrim were the people of the south also known as the southrons that lived in near Harad and far Harad.
Umbar was also a port city in the lands of Harad where pirates, mercenaries and corsairs resided. Black Numenoreans that were Numenoreans that disobeyed the Valars descending from the King’s Men also became lords of Harad and Umbar after the downfall of Numenor.
The people of harad would tame beasts known as oliphaunts or mumakil. The Blue wizards were able to cleanse some of the Haradrim, however most of the Haradrim were strong and old allies of Sauron. The Haradrim were also joining Sauron’s call of allies for war.
Faramir’s past – Bormir’s brother
Faramir was the younger brother of Boromir and second son of Denethor 2nd the Steward of Gondor. Denethor 2nd favored Boromir over Faramir as Boromir was more of a masculine warrior than Denethor 2nd favored while Faramir was a bit more delicate.
Nevertheless, Boromir always loved and cared for his brother Faramir. Faramir also favored and admired Gandalf that irritated Denethor 2nd more as Denethor 2nd never favored Gandalf since Denethor 2nd’s father Ecthelion 2nd was alive.
Faramir was leading the Rangers of Ithilien and captured Gollum, Frodo and Sam during a skirmish against the Haradrim at Henneth Annun,
Rangers of Ithilien
The Rangers of Ithilien were also called the Rangers of the South that was a group of rangers that descended from Ithilien.
The Ithilien region with Minas Ithil as the center city was also once the mainlands that Isildur used to rule. However, the forces of Mordor and the Haradrim constantly threatened the lands of Ithilien and eventually the main city Minas Ithil fell into Sauron’s hands and became Minas Morgul.
Like the Rangers of the North were descendants of Arnor, the Northern Kingdom, the rangers of Ithilien were the descendants of the lost Ithilien lands of Gondor.
Eowyn - Niece of Theoden
Eowyn was the daughter of Theodwyn, Theoden’s sister and the sister of Eomer. Theoden took in Eowyn his niece and his nephew Eomer after Theodwyn’s death.
The Rohan customs didn’t allow women much authority or rights for politics nor participation in war. Eowyn was however a stereoscopic female character (considering when the Lord of the Rings was published) as she excelled in horsemanship and swordsmanship even better than great warriors of Rohan.
Even Aragorn approves of the blade skills of Eowyn, however Eowyn still fears the old customs of Rohan that limited women’s ability. Aragorn once more in the movie encourages Eowyn to fight against old customs and show her abilities as a warrior to the world.
This stereoscopic characteristic of Eowyn is also depicted in her horrible cooking skills where Aragorn tastes the horrible soup Eowyn made which Gimli politely refuses to eat.
