Eomer’s encounter of the Three Hunters Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn

Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn the three hunters have been tracking the trails of the uruk hai and the hobbits Merry and Pippin.

Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas encounter the riders of Rohan, an eored(company of rohan riders) led by Eomer(Eomer was banished in the movie while in the novel, he wasn’t banished).

Eomer suspected the weird combination of a dwarf, elf and human of the three hunters and though Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas were spies of Saruman.

However, Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas proved that they weren’t spies of Saruman and inquires of a band of uruk-hai and the presence of hobbits. Eomer have ambushed the uruk-hai camp that kidnapped Merry and Pippin near the Fangorn forest.

Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas were in despair but asked for the location. Eomer gives two horses to the three hunters, probably from a fallen Rohan warrior.

Why did Eomer suspect Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn as Saruman’s spies

Saruman have used various sources of spies that were scattered throughout the whole middle earth. Saruman before his corruption had journeyed all over middle earth and had many connections.

Saruman was also able to utilize the information that he had from his journeys. Saruman would use his many connections and persuade them by providing great compensation to work for him.

Eomer thought that Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn the outsiders were also spies of Saruman. However after Eomer confirmed they weren’t spies Eomer informed them of the location of the uruk-hai camp that they’d ambushed the day before.

Eomer also warns Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas of the presence of the white wizard in the Fangorn Forest suspected to be Saruman.

Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas’s despair at the Uruk-Hai Camp & entrance into the Fangorn Forest

Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas found the burnt corpses of the uruk-hai and orcs that Eomer’s eored, the company of Rohan Riders have ambushed. Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas were in despair that they couldn’t save Merry and Pippin.

However, Aragorn finds trails of hobbits that led to the Fangorn Forest. The trio decides to follow the trails of the hobbits into the Fangorn Forest.

Fangorn Forest location and reputation

The Fangorn Forest was located south of Lothlorien and north of Rohan. The Fangorn Forest was located right beneath the southern side of the Misty Mountains right adjacent from Isengard as well.

The name Fangorn literally means beard of a tree as fang means beard in elvish Sindarin and orn means tree in Sindarin elf language.

The name of the Fangorn Forest was literally named after the first and eldest ent Treebeard. The Fangorn Forest was inhabited with ents, and huorns that were treelike creatures.

The ents and huorns weren’t friendly to beings that intruded the Fangorn Forest that made the Fangorn Forest notorious as no one was able to come out alive.

Ents – Origin and information

Ents were trees with humanoid forms that were created at the request of the Valar Yavanna who wanted a protector of nature.

The ents awaken on middle earth at a similar time when the elves first awaken. The first ent that was created and awakened first was Treebeard. Ents usually referred to the male ents while the entwives or the entmaiden referred to female ents.

There weren’t any entwives left according to Treebeard during the third age and the moment of the War of the Ring.

Ents usually only protected the nature and forests while staying neutral and haven’t interfered with the history of middle earth much. Still along with the huorns, ents would defend the forest and nature against any harm.

Huorn – Living Tree

Ents were intelligent humanoids while Huorns were literally living trees that couldn’t communicate. Although huorns lacked the intelligence, they were extremely powerful as they could move their twigs and trunks and swing them with great power.

The huorns of the Fangorn Forest would attack any being that threatened the trees or the forest. The huorns could also move and they would also live in other forests and protect the nature exerting power against those attempting to harm nature. Huorns and ents made the Fangorn Forest notorious.

Treebeard – The first Ent created

Treebeard was the eldest ent and the first ent ever to be created and awoken. Treebeard used to be one of Saruman’s friends where they would walk along the Fangorn Forest. However, after Saruman’s corruption,

Saruman would use the information that he got from the old conversations with Treebeard and used it against the ents and Treebeard.

Saruman and the forces of Isengard constantly cut down trees and destroyed the forests but Treebeard still stayed neutral but his patience started running out.

Merry and Pippin’s encounter with Treebeard

In the movie, Treebeard saved Merry and Pippin from the orc that was chasing them. Treebeard thought Merry and Pippin were strange looking orcs, however Merry and Pippin persuaded Treebeard that they were not orcs but hobbits.

Treebeard decided to consult with the White Wizard that Merry and Pippin feared would be Saruman. However, it turned out that the White Wizard was Gandalf and Gandalf consults Treebeard that Merry and Pippin were harmless hobbits.

Gandalf even asks Treebeard to take care of Merry and Pippin as Gandalf believed that Merry and Pippin had a role with Treebeard.

Frodo, Sam and Gollum’s destination – Dead Marshes

After passing through the rocky terrains of Emyn Muil, Frodo, Sam and Gollum arrive at the Dead Marshes. The corpses that filled the Dead Marshes were the dead elves, men, dwarves and orcs that were killed during the Battle of the Dagorlad.

The Battle of the Dagorlad was the final battle between the forces of Sauron and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

The Dead Marshes was much smaller but as it expanded, the corpses of the Battle of the Dagorlad also submerged into the swamps of the Dead Marshes and became part of it. J.R.R. Tolkien experienced the horrible warfare of trenches and even participated in the Battle of the Somme during World War 1.

This experience led him to makingthe Dead Marshes.

Frodo’s fall into the Dead Marshes

The Battle of the Dagorlad was so fierce that the corpses of the fallen couldn’t be retrieved. As a result, these corpses became part of the Dead Marshes.

There were haunting lights within the swamps of the Dead Marshes made by the dead that would tempt those who stared at them. Gollum described this as the candles of the corpses.

Frodo was also suddenly tempted by the light glowing in the Dead Marshes but Sam and Gollum was able to pull him out. Possibly the spite of the dead made such effects because Frodo was able to experience some of the scenes and experiences of the dead.

Frodo, Sam and Gollum even encounter a nazgul patrolling the Dead Marshes on a black wing, a fell beast.
