Controversy of the kingship of Gondor and Earnil the 2nd
After the death of Ondoher, the 31st king of Gondor during war against the wainriders, the prince of Arthedain(Arnor) Arvedui claimed his rights of the king of Gondor as the son-in-law of Ondoher.
Arvedui married the princess of Gondor Firiel who was Ondoher’s daughter, however the Gondor general Earnil became the 32nd king of Gondor as he was also a distant relative of the blood line of Anarion.
The Council of Gondor declared per this constitutional crisis that an heir of Anarion should become the king of Gondor. This political controversy was important because it would grant Aragorn, the divine kingship of both Arnor and Gondor. Aragorn (Aragorn the second) or Aragorn Elessar was a descendant of Avedui and Firiel.
Thus Aragorn from the Lord of the Rings was both the heir of Isildur and Anarion, thus gave him the divine rights as the King of the united kingdoms of the Realm of the Exiles of Numenor, Arnor and Gondor.
Despite the controversy, Earnil the 2nd of Gondor and Arvedui of Arthedain maintained their alliance where Arvedui would ask for urgent help by the invasion of Angmar.
Invasion of Angmar and the Downfall of Arthedian, the last kingdom of Arnor
Arthedain inflicted less damage from the Great Plague compared with the other human countries and the hobbits from the Shire.
However, the Witchking of Angmar has regained strength that it lost during the invasion of Cardorlan and Rhudaur where the orcs were immune to diseases as well as many other dark creatures were to the Great Plague.
Arvedui became the 15th king of Arthedain the last remaining kingdom that split of from the Northern Kingdom Arnor, however Angmar started an overwhelming invasion.
Arvedui requested aid from Gondor as Gondor and Arthedain made an alliance by the marriage of Arvedui and Firiel. Earnil the 2nd ordered his son Earnur to assemble an army for aid of Arthedain and Earnur assembled forces of Gondor and set sail to the west.
However, Gondor was too late and the forces of the Witchking of Angmar captured and destroyed Fornost, the capital of Arthedain.
Death of Arvedui and the loss of the palantirs
The 15th king of Arthedain collected the palantirs from Amon Sul that was kept in Fornost after the destruction of Amon Sul Tower and the palantirs of Annuminas the first capital of Arnor.
Cirdan sent a ship to the Icebay of Forochel to evacuate king Arvedui, however along with the two palantirs the Annuminas stone and the Amon Sul stone, king Arvedui sunk in a middle of a storm. By the death of Arvedui, Angmar has completely annihilated the Northern Kingdom Arnor.
Alliance of Gondor and the elves, Host of the West
The refugees of Arthedain fled to Lindon after Angmar destroyed Fornost, the capital of Arthedain while their king Arvedui sunk at sea.
Earnur’s Gondor army arrived at Lindon while Cirdan assembled the elves from Lindon along with the remaining men of Arthedain that could fight.
Together, after the great army of the Valars during the War of the Wrath, the Host of the West Alliance was formed to defeat Angmar.
Even the hobbits of the Shire joined the Host of the West as they were granted the Shire in return for their service. Elrond from Rivendell would send Glorfindel to lead dispatched elves from Rivendell to help the Host of the West.
Battle of Fornost
The Host of the West led by Cirdan, Earnur and Glorfindel marched to Fornost to face the Witch King of Angmar. The Witch King of Angmar didn’t choose to fortify Fornost but came out to the plains of Fornost to challenge the alliance of the men and elves the Host of the West.
The forces of Angmar of orcs and men that defected to the evil were crushed by the Host of the West. The cavalry of the Host of the West especially took a great role in destroying the armies of Angmar.
The Witch King of Angmar had no choice and started to retreat back to Angmar to his fortress Carn Dum.
Humiliation by the Witch King of Angmar and Glorifndel’s Prophecy
The Witch King of Angmar tried to flee to the fortress of Carn Dum in Angmar, however the Gondor prince Earnur cut off the Witch King of Angmar.
The Witch King of Angmar would then stop and accepted the duel from Earnur, however Earnur’s horse shrieked as it was frightened by the Witch King of Angmar and fled.
The Witch King of Angmar would laugh at Earnur as his horse fled and cursed Earnur humiliating him a coward. After Glorfindel caught up with Earnur and the Witch King of Angmar, the Witch King of Angmar fled.
Earnur who was humiliated by the Witch King of Angmar tried to pursuit him but Glorfindel stopped Earnur while Glorfindel made the prophecy that
“He will not return to this land. Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man will he fall.” Where the part that “The Witch King of Angmar will not fall by the hands of man” would become a lore among the humans.
Perish of Angmar
The main forces of Angmar were crushed during the Battle of Fornost and Angmar fell only within a year after the downfall of Arthedain.
The Host of the West was victorious and the Witch King of Angmar would stay in silence for a while. Eotheod from the Vales of the Anduin cleaned up the rest of the lands of old Angmar in hopes of expanding their lands.
Aranarth, the first Chieftain of the Dunedain
Aranarth was the son of King Arvedui and Firiel, thus the prince of Arthedain and a far descendant of Isildur and Anarion. Aranarth was residing in Lindon during the invasion of Angmar.
After Arthedain perished by the attack of Angmar, the remaining descendants of Numenor were called the Dunedain and Aranarth became the first Chieftain of the Dunedain. Aranath would send his sons to Rivendell and made a tradition to train his descendants under the elf lord Elrond.
Aranath would give the Elendilmir(the Star of Elendil), Scepter of Annuminas and the Ring of Barahir to Elrond at Rivendell where the shards of Narsil were also kept.
Aaranarth made such tradition to send the heirs of the Dunedain to Elrond as he knew that his blood lines were targeted by the evil beings of Middle Earth.
The remaining descendants of Arnor, the Dunedain would become the Rangers of the North where they would fight against evil while quietly hiding their true identities. Aragorn the second would be mentored by Elrond and become a ranger of the North as well.
