The Battle of the Five Armies – Bolg’s assembly of the orcs and goblins of the Misty Mountains at Mount Gundabad
Bolg was the orc chieftain that succeeded Azog, some stories say that Bolg was the son of Azog. Bolg resided at Mount Gundabad and ruled the orcs and goblins(once again in the Legendarium goblins and orcs are the same) of the Misty Mountains.
Bolg and the orcs of the Misty Mountains became alert of the dwarve’s quest to Erebor as they’ve received news of the death of the Goblin King at Goblin Town.
Bolg was keen on gathering intel since then and more news of the death of Smaug eventually reached Bolg while Bolg held a great grudge against the dwarves as well for killing Azog during the War of the dwarves and orcs.
Bolg would immediately mobilize the orcs, goblins, bats, wargs and marched to the Lonely Mountains to claim the treasure as the dragon Smaug was dead.
In the movie The Hobbit, the armies of the orcs of the Misty Mountains and Mount Gundbad would take the tunnels made by creatures called the were-worms.
(Azog was already killed by Dain Ironfoot at the Battle of Azanulbizar in the novel. Once again there are many differences in the movie The Hobbit series)
The Battle of the Five Armies – Siege of Erebor
Thranduil and Bard would try to negotiate with Thorin Oakenshield with the Arkenstone that Bilbo Baggins had stolen for them. Thranduil and Bard maintained a siege on the gates of Erebor while Thorin Oakenshield would talk terms with them.
Meanwhile, the dwarves of Iron hill lead by Dain Ironfoot would head to Erebor after receiving message from Throin Oakenshield
The Battle of the Five Armies – Gandalf’s rush to Erebor
After the White Council successfully driven off Sauron from Dol Guldur, Gandalf was alerted of the marches of the orcs of Moria and the orcs of Gundabad that were advancing to the Lonely Mountains and Erebor.
Gandalf also received news of the clash of the dwarves, humans and the elves at Erebor and right after the White Council’s attack on Dol Guldur was finished, Gandalf would rush to Erebor.
The Battle of the Five Armies – Arrival of Dain Ironfoot and Gandalf’s Arbitration
The dwarf troops of Dain Ironfoot from the Iron Hills arrived at Erebor threatening the humans and the elves. The dwarf troops of Dain Ironfoot were the tough veteran survivors of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
Before the humans of Lake-town, elves from Mirkwood and the dwarves of the Iron Hills clashed, Gandalf that rushed from Dol Guldur managed to arrive at the gates of Erebor before the collision of the three armies.
Gandalf would alert the march of the goblins, orcs and wargs to Erebor and arbitrates the Bard, Dain Ironfoot, and Thranduil to ally against the greater threat the orcs.
They all reached an agreement and set up a defense at Erebor to defend themselves from the orcs of Gundabad and the Misty Mountains led by Bolg.
The Battle of the Five Armies – Clash of Bolg’s orcs with the dwarf, elf and human alliance and the Charge of Thorin Oakenshield
The orcs, goblins and wargs mobilized by Bolg vastly outnumbered the dwarf, elf and human alliance. Thorin Oakenshield hasn’t opened up the gates of Erebor yet but the orcs led by Bolg charged against the three-army alliance.
Tranduil’s elves, Bard’s humans and Dain Ironfoot’s dwarves were able to lure the orcs into a choke point of the Gates of Erebor, however the sheer number superiority of the orcs started to overwhelm the allied forces.
Before the allied forces were overwhelmed, Thorin Oakenshield opened the Front Gates of Erebor and led a charge with his companions and spearheaded through the orcs.
The Battle of the Five Armies – Beorn and the Eagle’s joining of the Battle and the Death of Bolg
Despite the breakthrough into the orc’s offensive line led by Thorin Oakenshield, still the dwarf, elf and human army was outnumbered and struggled with the orc army in superior numbers.
Thorin Oakenshield was severely wounded during the battle where the Great Eagles and Beorn the skin changer in a form of a giant bear also engaged into battle.
Beorn was able to slaughter the orcs and goblins where he spotted Thorin Oakenshield wounded and trapped in the middle of the battle.
Beorn went deeper into the enemy lines and successfully brought Thorin out from the battlefield. Beorn would return to the battlefield and avenged Thorin Oakenshield by killing Bolg the commander of the orc, goblin and warg army himself.
The Battle of the Five Armies – Victory and the death of Thorin Oakenshield
After Bolg was killed by Beorn, the orcs and goblins of the Misty Mountains and Mount Gundabad started to panic and retreated from Erebor disorderly. The armies of the Mirkwood elves, dwarves of Iron Hills and the humans of Lake-Town pursuit the goblins and slayed as many goblins and orcs as possible.
Only about a quarter of the orcs and goblins of the Misty Mountains and Mount Gundabad survived while the elves, dwarves and men also suffered great losses.
Thorin Oakenshield would meet Bilbo Baggins once more before his death where Thorin apologized to Bilbo Baggins for his blind greed and passed away. Thranduil would put the Orcrist at Thorin Oakenshield’s burial and Dain Ironfoot would become the king of Erebor and the Iron Hills.
The Battle of the Five Armies – Bard the lord of Lake-Town and Thranduil’s return to Mirkwood
Bard would become the lord of Lake-Town and he would later rebuild Dale, the human town under Erebor. Dain Ironfoot would compensate Bard for the slaying of Smaug and the contribution of the men of Lake-town during the Battle of the Five Armies.
Bard would return the Arkenstone to Dain Ironfoot as well. Thranduil also received a considerable amount of treasure from Dain Ironfoot and returned to Mirkwood.
The dwarves of the Iron Hills and Erebor as well as the elves of Mirkwood also suffered great losses so they wouldn’t be able to take much action before the War of the Rings.
The Battle of the Five Armies – Bilbo Baggin’s return to the Shire
Bilbo Baggin was titled ‘Elf-Friend’ by the elf king of Mirkwood Thranduil and Dain Ironfoot also offered a great number of treasures which Bilbo only took a handful back to the Shire.
Together with Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins would return to the Shire with the treasures from Dain Ironfoot, mithril armor gifted by Thorin Oakenshield, the elf-dagger from Gondolin ‘Sting’ and the One Ring that Bilbo Baggins kept a secret.
Bilbo Baggins found out a garage sale of his belongings was opening as the hobbits of the Shire assumed he was dead. Bilbo Baggins would stop this garage sale.
Bilbo Baggins would live on peacefully writing stories based on his adventures while he would later bring in his beloved cousin Frodo Baggins who became an Orphan.
