[Lord of the Rings] - Prelude Part 8 – Founding of Rohan, Battle of Celebrant and the Oath of Eorl, Alliance of Gondor and Rohan

300x250

Invasion of the Balchoth Easterlings and Gondor’s request of aid to Eorl

The Balchoth was another tribe of the Easterlings that were urged by Sauron to invade Gondor as they’ve crossed the Sea of Ruhn. The steward of Gondor Cirion has been sending out scouts to watch out on the Balchoths as Mordor grew more aggressive over time.

Cirion would send a message to Eorl, the king of the Eotheod people for aid without knowing the Eotheod, the ancestors of Rohan would respond.

Battle of Celebrant

Cirion would lead legions of Gondor to the north while his son took command at Minas Tirith leading the southern army of Gondor. However, the Balchoths quickly crossed the Anduin River and cut off Cirion’s northern army of Gondor from the south.

Also, the orcs of the Misty Mountains attacked Cirion’s army from the north. Cirion’s army was pushed back to the field of Celebrant where they were at the brink of annihilation by the overwhelming Blachoths that have pursuit Cirion’s army to drive them into the Anduin River.

However, Eorl, the king of the Eotheod arrived with thousands of horse riders at Celebrant. At first, Cirion didn’t know of Eorl was an ally or enemy, however Eorl and the Eotheod charged against the Balchoths from the rear and completely wiped them off and led the victory of the Battle of Celebrant. Gondor was eventually saved by king Eorl and the cavalry riders of the Eotheod

Oath of Eorl / Oath of Cirion – Alliance of Rohan and Gondor

At Amon Anwar or the hill of Halifirien where the Tomb of Elendil stood, the Steward of Gondor Cirion would give his gratitude to Eorl and the Eotheod.

Eorl and Cirion would make the Oath of Eorl or the Oath of Cirion that would swear an alliance in front of Elendil, the first king of the Dunedains.

Cirion gifted the lands of Calenardhon to Eorl and the Eotheod where Eorl would found the country Rohan and become the first king of Rohan as a gift for the alliance between Gondor and Rohan.

The beacons of Gondor were constructed and Rohan and Gondor agreed to aid each other if a Red Arrow is received by message. After the Oath of Eorl, Cirion would relocate the Tomb of Elendil to Minas Tirith where Elendil shall rest in the Tombs of the Kings.

Oath by Rohan, Eorl

Hear now all peoples who bow not to the Shadow in the East, by the gift of the Lord of the Mundburg we will come to dwell in the land that he names Calenardhon, and therefore I vow in my own name and on behalf of the Eotheod of the North that between us and the Great People of the West there shall be friendship forever: their enemies shall be our enemies, their need shall be our need, and whatsoever evil, or threat, or assault may come upon them we will aid them to the utmost end of our strength. This vow shall descend to my heirs, all such as may come after me in our new land, and let them keep it in faith unbroken, lest the Shadow fall upon them and they become accursed.

Oath by Gondor in Quenya, Cirion

Vanda sina termaruva Elenna-nóreo alcar enyalien ar Elendil Vorondo voronwë. Nai tiruvantes i hárar mahalmassen mi Númen ar i Eru i or ilyë mahalmar eä tennoio.

“The oath shall last forever under the glory of the land of the star by the faith of Elendil, the Faithful and shall be kept by those who sit on the thrones of the west and the All Mighty Eru(Iluvatar) who stand above all thrones.”

Founding of Rohan

By answering the call for aid by Gondor, Eorl and the Eotheods that were descendants of the northern men of Rhovanion were gifted the fertile lands of Calenardhon by Cirion the steward of Gondor as return.

After the Battle of Celebrant, Eorl and Cirion would also make an alliance between Gondor and Rohan under the name of Elendil. Eorl would become the first king of Rohan and the Eotheods would migrate to Calenardhon, their new home from the Vales of the Anduin.

Rohan was especially famous for their horses and cavalry and the Eotheods would call themselves the Eorlingas, that means the people of Eorl after Rohan was founded.

Elves and the people outside of Rohan would call the Eolringas or the Eotheods the Rohirrim which means the horse-lords after their famous taming of horses. The Calenardhon would be called the Plains of Rohan.

Beacons of Gondor

After the Oath of Eorl and the founding of Rohan, seven beacons of Gondor were set along the Misty Mountains where Gondor could ask for aid of Rohan. Also by the Oath of Eorl, Gondor could send a Red Arrow that would symbolize aid in cases when the beacons of Gondor weren't lit and couldn't reach Rohan.

Enemies of Rohan – Dunlendings, Easterlings and orcs

The dunlendings that were residing in Dunland near Isengard and Calenardhon. They grew extremely hostile against the Eolringas of Rohan after they were granted the lands of Calenardhon by Gondor by the Oath of Eorl.

Dunlendings would infiltrate south of the Fangorn forest and expand north of the Westfold as well. Dunlendings weren’t as hostile to Gondor as the Dunedain and humans of Gondor didn’t settle in great numbers at Calenardhon.

However, as Calenardhon, the fields of Rohan started to populate in great numbers of the Rohirrim, the Eolringas, the Dunlendings were threatened and would cause conflict with Rohan constantly over the time.

Dunlendings already used to favor Sauron for their historic hate against Numenor and the Dunedain while Rohan would treat the men of Dunland as primitive savages.

The orcs of the Misty Mountains would also cause conflict with Rohan and the Easterlings that would cross the Sea of Ruhn through Rhovanion.

Rohirrim, Eolringas, the people of Rohan

The Eorlingas or the Rohirrim were descendants of the northmen that used to live in Rhovanion. There is a possibility that the Rohirrim, the people of Rohan were a very distant descendant of the Edain human of the House of Hador where Edain human heroes Hurin, Turin, Huor and Tuor were born.

The Rohirrim were stronger than ordinary humans, however they were less strong than the Dunedain, the descendants of Numenor that settled as Gondor and Arnor so they would also be called the Middle Men.

The people of Rhoan were famed for taming horses regardless of men and women as horses were an important resource for the people of Rohan.
