Numenor – Island of the Dunedain

Numenor was an island located between the Aman continent where the Valars resided and Middle Earth. The Valars gifted the island of Numenor to the descendants of the Edian humans that fought alongside the Valars, Maia and elves against the evil forces of Morgoth.

The descendants of the Edain humans were called the Dunedain and they would become the Numenoreans.

The son of Earnedil and Elwing Elros, who was also Elrond’s twin brother founded Numenor and became the first king of Numenor naming himself Tar-Minyatur.

The Edain humans were different from ordinary humans where some Edain human heroes were single handedly able to rival a balrog. Also, the Valars gifted the Numenoreans with longer life so their lifespan was about 600 years before their blood was mixed with ordinary humans.

Numenor – Downfall of Numenor and the Migration of the Numenoreans to Middle Earth

Numenor would later become the most powerful country among the other countries of Middle Earth. However, as time passed by and the fear of death consumed the Numenoreans, and the Numenoreans started to disobey and renounce the Valars.

By Sauron’s deception, Numenor attacked Valinor and the God Iluvatar sank Numenor by fury.

Some of the surviving Numenoreans called the King’s Men that disobeyed the Valars would later become lords of Umbar and Harad.

Numenoreans faithful and loyal to the Valars would be called the Faithful and those that Elendil led would become the people of Arnor and those that followed Anarion and Isildur that were Elendil’s son would become the people of Gondor.

Numenor – Ancestor of Arnor and Gondor

Arnor was called the Northern Kingdom of the Numenoreans in Exile while Gondor would become the Southern Kingdom of the Numenoreans in Exile.

Elendil would become the High-King of the Kingdom of the Numenoreans of Exile that would rule Arnor and Gondor. Elendil’s bloodline was the rightful king for Gondor and Arnor.

Isildur would become the second High King of the Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor, however Isildur died before he could claim his crown as the High King.

After Isildur’s death, Gondor became independent from Arnor and the bloodline of Anarion who Elendil’s son was and Isildur’s younger brother would become the royal heritage of Gondor.

Thus, the heir of both Isildur and Anarion would become the rightful royal bloodline for Arnor and Gondor. Aragorn, more specifically Aragorn the second was the rightful heir for both Arnor and Gondor as he was a descendant of Isildur and Anarion.

Arnor – Northern Kingdom of the Dunedain

Elendil led the Faithful Numenoreans to Eriador after the downfall of Numenor. With the help of Gil-Galad the high king of the elves that ruled Lindon, Elendil would form the Northern Kingdom of the Dunedain of Exile also known as Arnor in Eriador.

Elendil would make Annuminas the capital of Arnor and became the High King of the two kingdoms Arnor and Gondor as Elendil’s son Anarion and Isildur founded Gondor the Southern Kingdom.

With the palantirs or the Palantiri, Elendil could communicate with Gondor far away while watching over the vast lands of Eriador and Gondor.

Diversion of Arnor – Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur

After the death of Elendil at the War of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and the death of Isildur by the Tragedy of the Gladden Fields, Arnor and Gondor would part away as separate kingdoms.

Also, Arnor would become divided into three kingdoms after the death of Earendur the 10th king of Arnor because of a political dispute over the heir of Arnor of Earendur’s sons. Arnor would divide into three kingdoms called Cardolan, Arthedain and Rhudaur.

Downfall of Arnor – Angmar and the rangers of the north

A nazgul that would later become the lord of the nazguls the Witch King of Angmar founded the Kingdom of Angmar north of the three kingdoms of Arnor. Angmar under the command of the Witch King of Angmar would take down all three kingdoms Rhudaur, Cardolan and Arthedain.

Evil hills men of Rhudaur defected to Angmar and Rhudaur that was closest to the borders of Angamr perished first.

Cardolan also suffered from the war with Angmar and the Great Plague hit Cardolan so badly that Cardolan couldn’t recover and perished next. Arvedui would become the last king of Arthedain and Arnor as the capital of Arthedain Fornost fell into the Witch King of Angmar.

All the remnants of Arnor fell and the remaining Dunedains would assemble under the Chieftain of the Dunedain and continue to fight evil and protect Eriador as the Rangers of the North.

Arnor – Aragorn, descendant of Gondor and Arnor

Arthedain would form an alliance with Gondor by the marriage of Arvedui, the prince of Arnor and Firiel the princess of Gondor. Aragorn was a descendant of Arvedui and Firiel which made him the descendant of both Isildur and Anarion.

Shortly 1 year after the fall of Arthedain, the elves and humans allied against Angmar and Angmar perished as well.

The Witch King of Angmar would flee to the east without any regrets as Arnor believing that the royal bloodline of Arnor was cutoff.

However, Sauron and the Witch King of Angmar didn’t know that a descendant of the royal bloodline of the Northern Kingdom Arnor and Southern Kingdom Gondor survived. Later Aragorn would challenge and agitate Sauron as he was the rightful heir of both Arnor and Gondor.

Weathertop – Amon Sul

Amon Sul which was also called Weathertop was located near the borders of Cardolan and Rhudaur the old descending countries of Arnor.

Weathertop was a hill that was an important crossroad of Arnor and the tower of Weathertop or Amon Sul even once held one of the seven Palantir.

The towers of Amon Sul were destroyed by Angmar during their invasion of Cardolan and Rhudaur.

After the hobbits, including Frodo Baggins failed to meet Gandalf at Bree, the hobbits were accompanied by Aragorn on their journey to Rivendell.

Aragorn and the hobbits camped at the rubbles of the towers of Amon Sul at Weathertop and the nazguls ambushed them. Frodo Baggins was stabbed with the Morgul Blade of the nazguls at the ruins of Weathertop.
